How to Check Your Xbox Gift Card Balance (2026 Guide)
A verified, step-by-step walkthrough to view your Microsoft account balance on an Xbox console and on the web, redeem a 25-character Xbox gift card code, and fix the region errors that trip people up โ plus the honest answer to whether an unredeemed Xbox card can be checked online (it can't).
Check your balance on an Xbox console
First, a naming note that clears up most confusion: Xbox gift cards and Microsoft gift cards are the same thing. Both redeem into a single Microsoft account balance tied to your Microsoft account โ there is no separate โXbox wallet.โ To see it on a console:
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
- Go to Profile & system โ Settings.
- Select Account โ Payment & billing.
- Your Microsoft account balance is shown on that screen, in the currency of your account's region. You may be asked to re-enter your password first.
Check in a web browser
The same balance is visible from any computer or phone browser โ no console needed:
- Go to account.microsoft.com/billing/payments.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you use on your Xbox (the email tied to your gamertag).
- Your Microsoft account balance is displayed alongside your other payment methods, together with recent order history.
If the balance shows zero and you're sure you redeemed a card, you're almost certainly signed in to a different Microsoft account than the one the code was redeemed to โ many people have a personal, a work, and an old Hotmail/Live account. Check each one.
Checking an unredeemed card (the honest answer)
Unlike Apple โ which offers an official online checker for unredeemed cards โ Microsoft provides no way to look up an Xbox gift card's value before redeeming it. Neither xbox.com nor the console accepts a code just to โpeekโ at it. Your realistic options:
- Redeem it (Step 4). Xbox gift cards carry a fixed face value printed on the card or receipt, so a legitimate, unused card adds exactly that amount to your balance.
- Check the receipt if you're unsure the card was ever activated โ physical cards must be activated at the register by the store that sold them.
- Contact Xbox Support if the code is scratched off, damaged, or unreadable โ have a photo of the back of the card and your purchase receipt ready.
Redeem a new code (optional)
Ready to add the card to your balance? Scratch off the label to reveal the 25-character code (five blocks of five characters), then use whichever surface is closest:
- Xbox console: Press the Xbox button to open the guide โ select Store โ press the View button to open the side menu โ select Redeem โ enter the 25-character code โ Next and follow the prompts.
- Any browser: Go to microsoft.com/redeem, sign in, enter the code, click Next, then Confirm. The balance appears in your account immediately.
You don't need to type the dashes โ just the 25 letters and numbers. The value is added to your Microsoft account balance right away and shows up under Payment & billing within seconds.
Where a Microsoft account balance can (and can't) be spent
A redeemed Xbox gift card becomes ordinary Microsoft Store credit, usable on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and microsoft.com. The quick reference:
| Use | Covered by Microsoft account balance? |
|---|---|
| Games on the Xbox / Microsoft Store (console and PC) | Yes |
| Game add-ons, DLC, and in-game currency (V-Bucks, FIFA Points, etc.) | Yes โ when bought through the Microsoft Store |
| Apps on the Microsoft Store for Windows | Yes |
| Xbox Game Pass and other subscriptions | Yes โ but recurring billing usually requires a backup payment method (card or PayPal) on file |
| Movies and TV shows | No โ Microsoft ended new movie & TV purchases in the Microsoft Store in July 2025 (previously bought content remains watchable) |
| Purchases inside another storefront (Steam, PlayStation, retail shops) | No โ the balance only works in Microsoft's own store |
| A different country's storefront | No โ the balance is locked to your account's country and currency |
| Cash out, transfer to another account, or refund | No โ not refundable or transferable except where required by law |
If a purchase costs more than your remaining balance, the Microsoft Store charges the balance first and puts the difference on your default payment method โ you don't need to spend the balance in one go.
Troubleshooting
โThis code has already been redeemedโ
A redeemed code can't be redeemed twice โ the credit is already in a Microsoft account balance somewhere. Check your other Microsoft accounts first (an old Hotmail/Live/Outlook account is the usual culprit), and ask family members who had access to the card or the console. For a brand-new card that reports as used, go back to the retailer with your receipt, or contact Xbox Support.
โThis code is invalidโ / code not working
Re-enter the code carefully โ 25 characters, no dashes needed, and watch for look-alikes (B/8, G/6, 0/O). If it still fails, the card may never have been activated at the register; activation happens at the store where the card was bought, and Microsoft can't activate it remotely. Take the card and receipt back to the retailer.
โThis code can't be redeemed in your country or regionโ
Xbox gift cards are region-locked: the card's issuing country must match your Microsoft account's country/region setting. A US card won't redeem on a German or Polish account, and there's no cross-region conversion. Changing your account region to force a redemption is a bad idea โ your existing balance won't convert, and some purchases and subscriptions can break. The clean fix is a card issued for your account's actual country โ the same trap that catches companies sending one country's cards to a global team.
โMy credit disappearedโ โ promotional credit vs. gift card balance
Credit earned through Microsoft Rewards or promotional offers usually carries an expiry date, and expired promotional credit is removed from your balance. Retail gift cards are different: the card's code can have a redeem-by mechanic in some markets, but once redeemed, retail gift card funds don't expire. If an amount vanished, check your order history first (a subscription may have auto-renewed), then review whether the missing amount was promotional credit.
Someone asked you to pay them with an Xbox gift card
That is a scam, full stop. Xbox gift cards only buy digital content from Microsoft โ no government agency, utility, bank, or tech-support line accepts them as payment. Never read a code to someone over the phone or send a photo of the back of a card; once the code is shared, the funds are typically drained within minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check an Xbox gift card balance without redeeming it?
No. Microsoft offers no official online checker for unredeemed cards โ any site claiming to do this is harvesting codes. An unused, activated card is worth its printed face value; redeem it at microsoft.com/redeem to add it to your balance.
Do Xbox gift cards expire?
Retail Xbox gift cards don't expire in the US, and once redeemed, the balance stays in your Microsoft account until you spend it โ even years later. The exception is promotional credit (Microsoft Rewards payouts, bundle bonus codes), which typically has an explicit expiry date stated in the offer. Rules can differ by country, so check the terms printed on the card.
Are Xbox gift cards and Microsoft gift cards different?
No โ they redeem into the same Microsoft account balance and are spent the same way, on Xbox, Windows, and microsoft.com. The two designs exist mostly for gifting context: one looks like a gaming gift, the other looks neutral.
Can I use a US Xbox gift card in another country?
No. The code only redeems on a Microsoft account whose country/region matches the card's issuing country, and the balance is locked to that region's currency and storefront. For international recipients, always buy a card issued for their country.
Can I pay for Xbox Game Pass with a gift card?
Yes โ Game Pass and other subscriptions can be paid from your Microsoft account balance. The catch: because subscriptions renew automatically, Microsoft usually requires a backup payment method (credit/debit card or PayPal) on file, even when the balance covers the charge.
Can I transfer my Microsoft account balance or turn it into cash?
No. The balance can't be moved to another Microsoft account, sent to a friend, or cashed out โ it's not refundable or transferable except where required by law.
