PlayStation Store gift card: redeeming it, where it works and what to watch for
Redeem it on PS5, PS4, web or the app
Whatever the device, sign in to the account that should receive the money first. Sony is blunt about it: “It isn't possible to transfer funds or content between accounts.” A digital card arrives as a code in an email; a physical card hides it under a scratch panel. Either way it is 12 digits — if yours has 10, it is a discount code, which you enter in the cart instead.
PlayStation 5
Open PlayStation Store, press the triangle button, choose … (More) → Redeem Code, type the 12 digits and select Redeem.
PlayStation 4
In PlayStation Store, scroll to the bottom of the sidebar, select Redeem Codes, enter the code and confirm with Continue → Confirm.
Web browser
Sign in at store.playstation.com, select your profile and choose Redeem Code from the drop-down, then enter the code and select Continue.
PlayStation App (iOS and Android)
Tap the PS Store icon, open the menu on the right and choose Redeem Code. You can also apply a card at checkout under Redeem Codes and Gift Cards.
Does a US PlayStation card work in another country?
Only through a US account. Three rules from Sony's own pages combine into one answer:
- The code must match the account's region. Sony's redemption page says the code “needs to be for the same region as your account”. Physical cards carry a printed flag for their country.
- The wallet only takes its own country's currency. The PSN Terms of Service say the wallet will only accept prepaid cards with currency value from the same country as the one designated for your account. There is no conversion.
- The account country is permanent. Under the same terms, once an account is created you cannot change the country or region associated with it.
| Your situation | Will a US card work? |
|---|---|
| You live in the US with a US PSN account | Yes — this is what the card is for. |
| You moved abroad but kept your US account | Yes. The card follows the account's registered country, not where you are standing — but you also keep paying in the US store. |
| The recipient has a UK, EU, Canadian or other non-US account | No. Buy a card for their country's store instead. |
| You plan to make a new “US” account with a VPN | Don't. The terms require accurate account information and allow Sony to suspend accounts created with false information. Content and wallet funds can't be moved back to your main account either. |
For a friend overseas, ask which country their PSN account is registered in before you buy anything. If you send rewards to people in several countries, our guide to rewarding remote teams across countries covers the mismatch problem at scale.
What the wallet pays for
Once redeemed, the card is simply wallet money in the PlayStation Store. The terms say the funds have no value outside the Store and can be used only for Store purchases (and certain third-party services Sony allows).
- Full games and pre-orders on the PlayStation Store
- Add-ons, DLC and in-game currency sold through the Store
- PlayStation Plus — though Sony notes that buying a subscription with wallet funds may still require a payment method on the account
- Anything else the US PlayStation Store sells to your account's region
It cannot be spent at physical shops, on PlayStation hardware from retailers, or turned back into cash. Funds added to a wallet “can't be refunded”, according to Sony's wallet page.
Buying for a child: the family manager rules
This is the part most gift-givers miss. Sony's wallet page says a child account “doesn't have a wallet and can't add funds”, and its redemption page says wallet top-up codes “need to be redeemed on the family manager's account”.
Expiry, refunds and the wallet limit
- Expiry: Sony's US wallet page sets no expiry date for wallet funds. Some vouchers do print one, and Sony's troubleshooting page asks you to check it — promotional and subscription codes are the usual cases.
- Dormant accounts: the US terms reserve the right to delete account data Sony considers dormant. Signing in occasionally avoids the question.
- Refunds: wallet funds are non-refundable and non-transferable except where the law requires.
- Maximum balance: the terms say you can only hold a certain maximum amount of funds as determined by Sony, without naming a figure. A card that would push you over it can't be applied until you spend some funds.
When a code won't redeem
| What you see | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
| Code not accepted on a non-US account | Region mismatch. Codes only redeem in their own store region, and account regions can't be changed. Return to the seller if you bought the wrong region. |
| Code already used | Codes work once. Check the transaction history of every account you own — a redeemed code shows in the transaction details. |
| Card bought in store shows no value | Some cards say “no value until activated at register”. Ask the retailer to confirm activation. |
| Child account can't redeem | Wallet codes must go on the family manager's account (see above). |
| Nothing works | Check status.playstation.com for an outage, sign out and back in, then contact PlayStation Support with the purchase date, retailer, proof of purchase and photos of both sides of the card. |
Scams that use PlayStation cards
Frequently asked questions
Can I give a US PlayStation card to a friend in the UK or Europe?
Not usefully. Their account is tied to their own country's store and can only accept that country's cards, so the code would be refused. Buy a card issued for their region.
Can I use the card to pay for PlayStation Plus?
Yes, wallet funds can pay for a subscription, but Sony warns you may still need to add a payment method to the account when you buy one.
How is a digital card delivered?
As a 12-digit code by email. Treat that email like cash — anyone who types the code first keeps the value. When the Rewordin Store opens, PlayStation codes will be delivered by email for US accounts.
I redeemed it on the wrong account. Can Sony move it?
Sony states funds can't be transferred between accounts. If you didn't redeem it yourself, contact PlayStation Support with your proof of purchase.
How do I see how much is left?
Open PlayStation Store and press triangle on a PS5, or check Payment Management on the web. The full walkthrough is in how to check your PlayStation gift card balance.
