How to Check Your Steam Wallet Balance (2026 Guide)
A verified, step-by-step walkthrough to view your Steam Wallet balance on the Steam website and the desktop app, redeem a Steam gift card or wallet code, and fix the โcurrency of funds does not matchโ error that trips up codes bought for the wrong region.
Sign in to your Steam account
Your Steam Wallet balance lives on your Steam account, not on the physical card โ so the first step is signing in to the account you want to check. Pick whichever is handiest:
- Website (desktop or mobile browser): Go to store.steampowered.com and sign in with your Steam username and password (plus your Steam Guard code if prompted).
- Steam desktop app (Windows, macOS, Linux): Open Steam and confirm you're logged in to the right account โ your account name shows in the top-right corner.
Open your Account details
The destination is the same on every device โ the path differs slightly.
- Website: Hover over your account name in the top-right corner โ select Account details. You can also go straight to store.steampowered.com/account.
- Steam desktop app: Click your account name in the top-right corner โ choose Account details from the dropdown.
Your fastest shortcut is the top-right corner of Steam itself: the wallet total is displayed right below your profile name on both the website and the app, before you even open Account details.
View your Steam Wallet balance
The Account details page shows two things that matter here:
- Steam Wallet total โ the headline figure at the top of the page (labelled Steam Wallet or Store Credit), shown in your account's set currency. This is the combined total of every code and top-up you've added, minus anything already spent.
- Store transactions / wallet history โ under View purchase history (or Store & retail purchase history), a running log of top-ups, wallet-code redemptions, and purchases that drew the balance down. Use it to reconcile a balance that looks lower than expected.
There is no expiry column to worry about: Steam Wallet funds do not expire, and the balance simply sits on your account until you spend it on Steam.
Redeem a Steam gift card or wallet code (optional)
To add funds to your wallet, redeem the code โ you must be logged in first:
- Website: Go to store.steampowered.com/account/redeemwalletcode, type the code into the box and select Continue. If the code is valid, the funds are added instantly.
- Steam desktop app: Open the Games menu (top-left) โ Redeem a Steam Wallet Codeโฆ โ enter the code โ confirm.
The wallet code is the 15-character string on the back of a physical Steam gift card (under the scratch-off panel) or in your digital gift email, formatted as XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Once applied, the amount lands in your wallet immediately.
Where a Steam Wallet balance can (and can't) be spent
Steam Wallet funds cover almost everything sold on Steam, but they stay inside the Steam ecosystem. Here's the quick reference:
| Use | Covered by Steam Wallet balance? |
|---|---|
| Games and DLC on the Steam store | Yes |
| In-game purchases in Steam titles (skins, currency, passes) | Yes |
| Steam Community Market items (trading cards, cosmetics) | Yes |
| Software and creative tools sold on Steam | Yes |
| Steam hardware (e.g. Steam Deck) where wallet is accepted | Yes |
| Purchases outside Steam (other stores, subscriptions) | No |
| Withdrawing to cash or a bank account | No |
| A purchase in a different currency than your wallet | No |
At checkout, Steam applies your wallet balance first; if an order total is higher than your balance, you pay the remainder with another payment method. Wallet funds can only be used for purchases in the same currency your wallet is set to.
Troubleshooting
โThe currency of funds in your Steam Wallet does not match the currency of this purchaseโ
This is the single most common Steam Wallet problem, and it's a currency/region mismatch. Every Steam account is associated with one currency, and both wallet codes and store prices are tied to a currency. If you redeemed a code issued in a different currency โ or your store country changed โ your wallet can end up holding funds it can't spend on the current purchase.
- Check which currency your wallet is in (shown next to the balance on the Account details page) and which currency the code you're trying to redeem is issued in.
- Only redeem wallet codes that match your account's currency. A code issued for one region's currency will return an error on an account set to a different currency.
- If your funds and the store price are in different currencies because of a country change, contact Steam Support โ this is handled case by case and can't be self-converted.
โI can't see the balance of a code I haven't redeemedโ
This is by design โ Steam won't display the value of an un-redeemed wallet code online. You have two options: redeem it to your account (Step 4) and read the balance there, or, if you have a physical Steam gift card, check the value printed on the front of the card.
โMy balance is lower than the code I redeemedโ
Open your purchase history from the Account details page. Steam applies wallet funds automatically to eligible purchases, so a recent game, DLC, or Community Market buy may have quietly drawn it down. The history lists every top-up and every purchase that used wallet funds, which is usually enough to account for the difference.
โMy wallet code says it's invalid or already usedโ
First retype the code by hand โ copy-paste sometimes captures a trailing space or a look-alike character. If it still fails and you bought the card new, keep the receipt and contact Steam Support with the code so they can trace it. For codes bought from third-party resellers, contact the reseller first; already-used or region-locked codes are a known risk with unofficial sellers, and Valve can't refund cards bought outside Steam.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check my Steam Wallet balance?
Sign in to Steam, then open Account details (hover your account name in the top-right on the website, or click it in the desktop app). Your Steam Wallet total is shown at the top of that page, and also next to your profile name in the top-right corner of Steam.
Can I check a Steam wallet code balance without redeeming it?
Not online โ Steam only shows a balance once a code is redeemed to an account. If you have a physical Steam gift card, the value is printed on the card. Otherwise you'll need to redeem the code to see the amount.
Do Steam Wallet funds expire?
No. Steam Wallet funds don't expire โ the balance stays on your account until you spend it on Steam. That makes Steam gift cards a convenient reward for gamers, since there's no deadline to use them.
Why does my Steam wallet code say the currency doesn't match?
Each Steam account is set to one currency, and wallet codes are issued per currency. A code issued in a different currency than your account will return a mismatch error and can't be redeemed. Always use a code that matches your Steam account's currency.
Can I transfer my Steam Wallet balance or convert it to cash?
No. Once funds are in your Steam Wallet they're tied to that account โ they can't be transferred to another account, moved to a bank, or converted to cash. They can only be spent on Steam. (You can request a refund of wallet funds bought on Steam within 14 days if you haven't used any of them.)
