Steam Wallet cards in 2026: how to redeem one, where it works, and what's changing
By Maciej Kamieniak · Reviewed by Natalia Kamieniak · Last updated October 28, 2026
The short version: a US Steam Wallet card adds US dollars to a Steam Wallet. Redeem it while signed in at the Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page. Valve limits redemption to the currency of your Steam Wallet, so a USD card needs a USD wallet. The money can't be moved to another account, and it buys games, in-game items, software and hardware sold on Steam.
How do I redeem a Steam Wallet code?
- Sign in to the Steam account that should get the money — in a browser or the Steam desktop app.
- Open store.steampowered.com/account/redeemwalletcode (the “Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code” page).
- Type the code into the Steam Wallet Code field and click Continue.
- The new balance appears in the upper right, next to your profile name.
On a phone, the same page works in a mobile browser. Our Steam Wallet balance guide shows every other place the balance appears.
Can I use a US Steam card in another country?
The deciding factor is your wallet's currency, not your passport. Valve lists “limiting redemption to be in the currency of your Steam wallet” among its anti-scam measures, and its FAQ explains how that currency is set: an account that has never had a balance may be asked for a current address to determine it, and an existing wallet keeps its current currency.
| Wallet | US (USD) Steam card |
|---|---|
| Existing USD wallet | Redeems normally. |
| Wallet in euros, pounds, or another currency | Expect it to be refused — redemption is limited to the wallet's currency. |
| Brand-new account outside the US | Steam may ask for your address to set the wallet currency; don't misstate it to force USD. |
On VPNs, the Steam Subscriber Agreement is direct: you agree not to use IP proxying or other methods to disguise your place of residence, and Valve can end access for doing so. For the bigger picture on cross-border gifting, see rewarding remote teams in different countries.

What can I buy with Steam Wallet funds?
Valve says the value can only be used to buy products such as video games, in-game items, software and hardware on Steam — and, if your account isn't limited, items on the Steam Community Market. The Subscriber Agreement adds that wallet funds have no cash value and can't be exchanged for cash. You can't spend a Steam card on PlayStation, Xbox or anywhere outside Steam — for those, see our PlayStation and Xbox card guides.
Is there a limit, expiry or fee?
- Limit: within any 24 hours, what's stored in your wallet plus what you spend may not exceed US$2,000 (or the local equivalent). Deposits that would go over can be held back.
- Expiry: the only wallet expiry in the Subscriber Agreement is a six-month rule for Japanese subscribers; it sets none for US wallets.
- Refunds: wallet funds are non-refundable and non-transferable. The 14-day refund Valve offers covers wallet funds bought on Steam and unused — not retail cards.
- Transfers: Valve says wallet funds cannot be moved or gifted to another Steam account.
- Age: you must be 13 or older to have a Steam account.
“Pay the fine in Steam cards”
A caller poses as an official agency such as the IRS and demands payment for taxes, bail, debts or sweepstakes “fees”. The victim is told to buy Steam cards at a local shop, scratch off the codes and read them out or text a photo.
Valve's advice: if someone asks to be paid in Steam cards, you are most likely being scammed. If you haven't handed over the codes, take the cards back to the retailer's service desk — activated but unredeemed cards are normally refundable there. If you have, keep the cards and receipt, report it to local police and to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
The same goes for “free Steam Wallet code” generators and trade offers that ask for your code first: anyone who sees the code can redeem it.
Steam Wallet card FAQ
Will my old Steam Gift Card still work after retailers stop selling them?
Yes. Valve says existing gift cards can still be used on Steam whenever you choose, subject to local laws.
Can I send Steam money to a friend in another country?
A USD code needs a USD wallet. For a friend with a different wallet currency, buy a Steam Digital Gift Card on Steam and pick them as the recipient: Valve says it is automatically converted into your friend's currency, and if they decline it, you're refunded. You can't pay for one with existing wallet funds.
How does a digital Steam Wallet code arrive?
As a code by email, which you redeem on the redeem page. When the Rewordin Store opens, US Steam codes will be delivered by email.
I added funds but my balance didn't change. What now?
Valve's checklist: confirm the purchase receipt, make sure you're signed in to the account on that receipt, and restart the Steam client. If it still hasn't appeared after two hours, contact Steam Support.
Can I control what my child spends on Steam?
With Steam Families, a child can request that an adult pays for their shopping cart, and the adult approves on a phone or by email before anything is bought.
