How to Check Your Spotify Gift Card Balance (2026 Guide)
A Spotify gift card never has a balance in the sense people search for. Before redemption there is no checker to read it; after redemption the dollars are gone and what remains is time — months of Premium, shown as a date on your account page. And as of 2026 there is a bigger change to know about: Spotify has stopped selling gift cards altogether. Cards already bought still work. Here is how to read what yours is worth, and the six account situations in which it will not go through at all.
Check that your account can take a gift card
Do this first, because most “my Spotify card doesn't work” problems are not card problems. Spotify's US card terms say a gift card “is redeemable only for full price standalone Premium subscription months” and “cannot be redeemed for discounted or group subscriptions.” In practice your account must be:
- On Spotify Free or Premium Individual — not Premium Family, Premium Duo, Premium Student, a trial offer or a Basic plan.
- Without an add-on. Spotify states that gift cards “can't be applied to your account if you're subscribed to an add-on.”
- Set to the country where the card was bought. Your account country is shown on your account page; it has to match the card.
Reveal the code
- Physical card: Spotify recommends “using a coin or card to gently scratch off the PIN cover” on the back. Press lightly — the code is printed underneath and scratches off with too much force.
- Digital card or code: the code is in the delivery email from the retailer or promotion that issued it.
- Read it carefully. Spotify codes are alphanumeric — “capitalized alphabets, numbers, or a combination of both.” Spotify specifically warns that a zero looks like a capital O and a capital I looks like a one.
Redeem at spotify.com/account/redeem
- Go to spotify.com/account/redeem in a browser and log in. (The card terms give the shorter
spotify.com/redeem, which leads to the same flow.) - Enter the code from the back of the card.
- Click Continue, then Redeem.
You get four attempts. After that Spotify shows an error and you have to wait 24 hours before trying again — so if the first two tries fail, stop and re-read the code character by character rather than burning the last attempts.
Read your remaining Premium time
This is the step people mean by “checking the balance”. Spotify does not show a dollar figure for a redeemed card. It shows a date:
- On the web: open your Spotify account page. Spotify says “you can find your billing date at the top of your account page.”
- In the app: tap your profile picture, then Settings and privacy → Account → Billing.
- For a record of the redemption: on the account page go to Payment history, select the payment, then Manage → View receipts. Spotify keeps receipts for the last two years.
How to read that date: Spotify says the gift card “starts on your plan's next payment date — or immediately if you've upgraded from a free account.” So if you were already paying for Premium, your billing date jumps forward by the months the card bought; if you were on Free, Premium starts now and the date shows when it ends.
Spotify no longer sells gift cards: what that means for yours
Spotify's gift card help page now opens with a notice rather than instructions: “Spotify gift cards are no longer available for purchase. Previously purchased gift cards remain valid and can still be redeemed. If you'd like to subscribe, please use another available payment method.” The same wording appears on the US, UK and Australian versions of the page we checked in October 2026. Spotify has not published an end-of-sale date on its help center, so we do not give one here.
Practically, four things follow:
- A card you already hold is still good under the terms it was sold with — in the US that means no expiry; in the UK and Australia, 12 months from purchase (see expiry).
- A card on a shelf today is old stock. Retailers may still have some, but every one of them is a card bought before Spotify stopped selling. Check the activation receipt, and in the UK or Australia remember the 12-month clock started at purchase, not when it reaches you.
- Be suspicious of “new” Spotify codes sold online. Spotify's US terms say cards “may not be resold without express written authorization” and are “not valid and will not be honored” if obtained from unauthorised sellers, including auction sites.
- Prepaid Premium is not completely gone. Spotify's payment-methods page says available options vary by country and are listed at spotify.com/premium once you choose a plan; its country-settings page also refers to non-recurring methods such as “a gift card or a top-up”. What is available depends on where your account is registered.
Why the balance is time, not money — and how to convert it
Spotify's US card terms are explicit about the conversion: when you redeem a gift card, “the full value of the Card will be used to purchase a number of months of subscription equal to the total value of the Card, divided by the per-month subscription fee.” The terms also distinguish two products that look identical in a drawer:
| Card type (US terms) | Denominated in | What redemption gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Gift Card / eGift Card | Currency (e.g. $60) | Face value ÷ monthly Premium Individual price, in months |
| Subscription Card / eCard | Months (e.g. 6 months) | Exactly the months printed. Spotify says these “have no value or balance” and “are not gift cards” |
| Premium Code / PIN | Either currency or months | Depends on how the code is denominated |
For a currency card, the arithmetic is therefore yours to do. At the US Premium Individual price shown on spotify.com/us/premium when we checked on October 21, 2026 — $12.99 a month — the formula gives:
| Card face value (example) | Value ÷ $12.99 | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| $25 | 1.92 months | Just under 2 months |
| $30 | 2.31 months | About 2 months 9 days |
| $50 | 3.85 months | Just under 4 months |
| $60 | 4.62 months | About 4 ½ months |
| $100 | 7.70 months | About 7 ½ months |
Two caveats. First, Spotify does not publish how it rounds a fraction of a month, so treat the right-hand column as an estimate and trust the billing date your account shows. Second, the conversion uses the price at redemption. Spotify has raised Premium prices before, and every increase shortens the time an unredeemed currency card buys — a good reason not to leave one in a drawer.
Troubleshooting: why a Spotify gift card will not redeem
Match your situation to the cause. Every row is taken from Spotify's own help pages and card terms.
| Situation | Why it fails | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Code “not valid” after typing | A look-alike character (0/O, 1/I) or a typo | Re-enter carefully; codes use capital letters and numbers only |
| Error after several tries | Four failed attempts trigger a lock | Wait 24 hours, then try once more with the code checked |
| Store-bought card rejected | Not activated at the till | Return it to the store with the receipt — Spotify cannot refund store-bought cards |
| You are on Family, Duo, Student or a trial | Cards only pay for full-price individual Premium | Redeem on a Free or Premium Individual account |
| You are on a Basic plan | Spotify: “You can't apply a gift card on a Basic plan.” | Switch to Free or Premium Individual first |
| Your account has an add-on | Cards cannot be applied while an add-on is active | Remove the add-on, or redeem on another account |
| Card bought in another country | Account country must match the country of purchase | Use it on an account registered in that country; there is no conversion |
| Already 18 months of Premium on the account | The stacking cap | Keep the card until the billing date moves inside 18 months |
| Premium is billed through a partner (carrier, bundle) | Spotify says changes to a plan associated with a partner have to be made with that partner | Check the partner named under Your plan on the account page and ask them, or use the card on a Free or Premium Individual account |
| UK or Australian card over a year old | UK terms: the card must be redeemed within 12 months of purchase, after which “the PIN will expire” | Nothing can be done through Spotify; contact the retailer if it was sold already expired |
One more trap: moving country. Spotify's country-settings page says that if you have Premium “through a non-recurring payment method (like a gift card or a top-up), you'll need to wait until your account changes back to the free service before updating your payment method.” Redeem a card and then move abroad, and the account is effectively frozen to the old country until the gift card time runs out.
Expiry, refunds and cash: US vs UK and Australia
Spotify's card rules are not the same everywhere. The two versions we checked differ on the point that matters most:
| Question | United States (Spotify USA Inc. terms) | United Kingdom (Spotify AB terms) |
|---|---|---|
| Does the card expire? | No. “Cards do not expire, and no inactivity fees or service fees apply.” | Yes. “The Card must be redeemed within 12 months of the date of purchase.” The Australian help page states the same 12 months |
| Fees? | None | None stated |
| Cash or refund? | Not refundable, no cash value, “except as required by law” | Cannot be redeemed for cash or credit, returned or resold, except where required by law |
| Plans it can pay for | Full-price standalone Premium only — no student, trial, family or bundled offers | Premium Individual only — not Student, Duo, Family, trials, bundles or Basic |
| Partial use | Single-use; full value converted into months | Single-use; “no incremental redemption or credit is permitted” |
The US position is more generous than federal law requires: Regulation E sets a five-year minimum before a gift card may expire rather than banning expiry. In the UK and Australia, the 12-month window runs from the date of purchase — which is why a card bought months ago as a present can already be close to dead when it is opened.
How Spotify compares with other subscription cards
Spotify sits at the far end of a spectrum. Most digital-content cards credit a money balance you can watch go down; Spotify's converts straight into time and keeps no balance at all.
| Card | Balance checker before redeeming? | After redeeming, you see | Still sold? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spotify | No | A billing date (months of Premium) | No — existing cards only |
| Netflix | No — netflix.com/redeem only | A Netflix money balance on Billing Details | Yes |
| Apple | Yes for the universal Apple Gift Card; no for older App Store & iTunes cards | An Apple Account balance in currency | Yes |
| Google Play | No — redeem to see it | A Google Play balance in currency | Yes |
| Xbox | No — redeem to see it | A Microsoft account balance in currency | Yes |
The practical difference: with a money balance, a price rise just spends it a little faster. With Spotify, the conversion into months happens once, at the price on the day you redeem.
Gift card “generators” and other scams
Search for Spotify gift cards and you will meet pages promising free codes from a “generator”. There is no such thing: a valid code exists only because someone paid for it, and Spotify's terms say it will refuse to honour a card it suspects was obtained fraudulently. The FTC's guidance on gift card scams applies in full:
- Never type a Spotify code into any site other than spotify.com. No third party can read a Spotify card balance — Spotify does not publish one.
- Nobody legitimate is paid in gift cards — not a government agency, a utility, a bank or “Spotify billing”.
- Never share the code by phone, text or photo. Whoever enters it first gets the Premium time.
- Treat unofficial resellers with care, especially now that Spotify is no longer selling cards itself. The US terms void cards bought from unauthorised sellers.
- If it has happened, contact the retailer that sold the card and report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Giving Spotify Premium to a team now that cards are gone
Spotify cards used to be an easy small reward: almost everyone uses the app, and a few months of ad-free music is a gift people notice. Even before sales ended, they were an awkward fit for a company, for four reasons that are worth carrying into whatever you choose instead.
First, the plan restriction. Anyone on a Family, Duo or Student plan — a large share of any workforce — simply cannot use the card without leaving their plan. A reward that makes a third of recipients change their household subscription is not much of a reward.
Second, the country lock. A card works only where it was bought, so one batch cannot serve a distributed team. The same problem applies to Netflix's currency rule, and it is the main reason multi-brand catalogues replaced single-brand cards for international teams.
Third, tax. In the United States a gift card given to an employee is a cash equivalent and taxable as wages regardless of amount. Our guide to the IRS rules on gift cards for employees covers the gross-up maths; other countries have their own thresholds, such as the UK trivial benefits exemption.
Fourth, supply. With Spotify out of the gift card business, any programme that relied on Spotify codes needs a replacement. The safest one gives the recipient a choice of brand in their own currency — something a bulk gift card API can issue and deliver automatically. The broader trend toward choice-based rewards is covered in our 2026 gift card statistics.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check my Spotify gift card balance?
Before redemption there is no way to check it — Spotify publishes no balance checker. After redemption the card has become Premium time: open your Spotify account page, where Spotify shows your billing date at the top, or in the app go to your profile picture → Settings and privacy → Account → Billing. That date is when the gift card time ends.
Can I check a Spotify gift card without redeeming it?
No. The only official page is spotify.com/account/redeem, and it applies the card to the account you are signed in to. Any site that claims to check a Spotify card balance is not connected to Spotify.
Has Spotify stopped selling gift cards?
Yes. Spotify's help center states that Spotify gift cards are no longer available for purchase, and that previously purchased cards remain valid and can still be redeemed. Spotify has not published an end-of-sale date on that page.
Do Spotify gift cards expire?
In the United States, no — Spotify's US card terms state that cards do not expire and carry no inactivity or service fees. In the UK the card must be redeemed within 12 months of the date of purchase, and Spotify's Australian help page states the same 12-month validity.
Can I use a Spotify gift card on a Family or Duo plan?
No. Spotify gift cards can only pay for a full-price individual Premium plan. They cannot be applied to Premium Family, Premium Duo, Premium Student, trial offers or Basic plans, or to an account with an add-on.
How many months does a Spotify gift card give?
For a currency card, Spotify divides the card's value by the monthly Premium price. At the $12.99 US Premium Individual price listed on October 21, 2026, a $60 card works out to about 4.6 months. Subscription cards denominated in months give exactly the months printed on them.
Can I redeem more than one Spotify gift card?
Yes, up to a limit: Spotify says you can only stack 18 months of Premium time on an account. Each card extends your billing date; if you are already near 18 months, keep the next card until the date gets closer.
Why does Spotify say my gift card is not valid?
Usually a look-alike character (zero and O, one and I) or a store card that was never activated by the cashier. After four failed attempts you must wait 24 hours. If the code is right, check the plan type, add-ons and account country — see the troubleshooting table.
Will Spotify charge me after the gift card runs out?
Only if a payment method is saved. Spotify says payments continue normally once the gift card amount is spent; with no payment method on file, the account reverts to the free, ad-supported service.
Can I get a refund for a Spotify gift card?
Not from Spotify. Its refund policy says store-bought gift cards cannot be refunded and should be returned to the store, and the card terms say cards are not refundable and have no cash value except where the law requires.
