Where a US Apple Gift Card works, and where it doesn't

Apple's gift card terms say cards bought in the US can only be linked to a US Apple Account and used for purchases in the United States. Apple's troubleshooting page puts it more simply: gift cards can only be redeemed in the country or region where they were bought. Here is what that means in practice:

Your Apple Account is set to the US
Works. Redeem it and the value is added to your Apple Account balance in USD.
Your account is set to another country
Won't redeem. For a physical card bought in the wrong region, Apple suggests going back to the retailer that sold it.
Buying hardware at an Apple Store abroad
Not covered. The card pays for US purchases only, and Apple's online store ships these orders only within the US (including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico).
Using a VPN or a foreign address
Doesn't help. The rule follows your Apple Account's country or region, not your IP address, so a VPN won't make a US card work on a non-US account.
Giving it to family abroad
Only useful if they have a US Apple Account. Otherwise, buy a card issued in their own country.

How to redeem it on each device

Start by finding the 16-digit code on the back of the card. On some cards you'll need to peel or gently scratch off a label first. For an emailed gift card, open the email and click Redeem Now.

Once you redeem the card, its value joins your Apple Account balance and the physical card or code can't be used again on its own. To see what's left, follow our guide on how to check an Apple Gift Card balance.

What it can and can't pay for

Apple's own list of what your balance covers:

  • Products and accessories at apple.com, an Apple Store or the Apple Store app
  • Apps, games and in-app purchases from the App Store
  • Music, movies and more from the iTunes Store, the Apple TV app and Apple Books
  • Subscriptions such as Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple TV and App Store app subscriptions
  • iCloud+ storage

Expiry and fees: neither Apple's US gift card terms nor its support pages list an expiration date or any fees for Apple Gift Cards. The card isn't reloadable, and Apple isn't responsible for lost or stolen cards. Whoever has the code can redeem it, so treat it like cash.

Moving abroad with an Apple Account balance

Your balance doesn't follow you to a new country. Apple's support page on changing your Apple Account country or region sets out the order of things:

Spend the balance first

Use what's left on App Store or other Apple service purchases. If it's less than the price of a single item, contact Apple Support to clear it.

Cancel subscriptions that block the change

Then wait for the current period to end, along with any memberships, pre-orders, movie rentals, Season Passes and pending refunds.

Have a payment method for the new country

Apple may ask for one. If you don't want to add one, Apple suggests waiting until you're in the new country and creating a new Apple Account.

Common redemption errors

Message or problemWhat to do
“Card is not valid”Make sure it isn't an older Apple Store Gift Card, which can't be redeemed in the App Store or iTunes Store. Type the code that starts with “X” by hand, and watch for B/8, O/0 and S/5.
“Card has already been redeemed”Sign out of the App Store or iTunes Store on all your devices, then sign back in to refresh your balance.
“Card is not activated”The shop that sold the card didn't activate it. Go back to the retailer.
Wrong country or regionThe card only redeems in its country of purchase. For a physical card, return it to the retailer.
Scratched or damaged codeContact Apple Support. Have photos of the card, the receipt and the serial number ready (it starts with GCA, PBH or EPY).

Apple Gift Card FAQ

Can I use a US Apple Gift Card in Canada or the UK?

No. US cards only link to US Apple Accounts and only pay for US purchases. That includes Apple Stores outside the US.

Can I use it on hardware and the App Store at the same time?

Yes. The current Apple Gift Card covers both Apple products and Apple Account purchases. The older Apple Store Gift Card works only for products.

Does an Apple Gift Card expire?

Apple's US terms list no expiration date and no fees. Promotional codes can be different, so read the terms that came with them.

Can my family use my balance?

No. Apple says Family Sharing members can't spend your Apple Account balance.

Can I get cash back for an unused balance?

Not normally. Apple Gift Cards can't be redeemed for cash except where the law requires it.

Is an Apple Gift Card a good employee reward?
