How to Check Your Uber Gift Card Balance (Uber & Uber Eats, 2026)

Most gift cards have a page where you type the card number and PIN and read the balance. Uber does not. An Uber gift card is a code that turns into Uber Cash the moment you redeem it, and from then on the only balance that exists is the one in Wallet in the Uber or Uber Eats app. Here is where to find it, how to tell the gift card part apart from promotional credit that can expire, the account cap Uber's own pages disagree about, and the five reasons a code gets rejected.

Check the card matches your account country

Do this before you scratch anything, because it is the one problem you cannot fix after redeeming. Uber's help center says “Uber gift cards can only be used in the country where purchased,” and its gift card page adds that redeemed cards “can only be spent in countries that accept payment in the same currency that was originally issued.” The US Uber Cash terms go further: Uber Cash “may not be redeemed outside of the United States, nor in United States cities where Uber, Uber Eats, or Postmates are not available.”

  1. A US dollar card works on a US account, in the Uber, Uber Eats and Postmates apps.
  2. A card bought abroad (a UK, Canadian or Australian card, say) works only in that country's currency. Travelling with a foreign card does not unlock it in the US, and the reverse.
  3. A saved payment method is required. Uber states that “a valid payment method such as a credit card is required at all times in order for the gift card balance to work.” An account with no card on file cannot spend a gift card, even one that covers the whole fare.
2

Redeem the code into Uber Cash

Uber's current US gift card page gives this path, which works in both the Uber app and the Uber Eats app:

  1. Update the app to the latest version — Uber's help center lists this as the first step.
  2. Tap Account, then Wallet.
  3. On the Uber Cash card, tap + Add Funds. (Some app versions show + Gift Card or Add Payment Method → Gift Card instead; Uber's own help articles describe all three.)
  4. Choose Gift card.
  5. Enter the PIN or gift code “with no spaces” and confirm.

Uber's help center says “gift cards are added directly to your Uber Cash balance.” You need an Uber account to redeem one, and Uber is explicit that “once a gift card is added to an Uber account, it can't be transferred” — so if the card is a gift for someone else, let them redeem it on their own account.

3

Read your Uber Cash balance in Wallet

  1. Open the Uber app or the Uber Eats app.
  2. Tap Account, then Wallet.
  3. The Uber Cash card at the top shows the balance in your account currency.

There is one balance per account, not one per app. Uber's terms describe Uber Cash as redeemable “via the Uber app, the Uber Eats app, the Postmates app,” so a card redeemed in the Uber Eats app is spendable on a ride, and vice versa. If the number looks wrong, check you are signed in to the same account in both apps — a work profile or a second email address is the usual culprit.

In the UK, the balance is shown as Uber Money rather than Uber Cash: Uber's UK gift card terms say the card is “redeemable with Uber in exchange for Uber Money,” a regulated e-money product issued by Uber Payments UK Limited, and direct balance enquiries to “the Payments Section in your Uber app.”

4

Open the balance breakdown

The total on the Uber Cash card can mix two kinds of money, and they follow different rules. Uber's Australian gift card terms describe the screen that separates them: in the app, go to Account → Wallet (or Payment), tap Uber Cash and select View balance breakdown. Menu labels vary by country and app version; if you do not see the option, tap the Uber Cash card itself and look for the transaction or activity list.

The breakdown is worth thirty seconds because promotional credit is the part that can quietly disappear — the next section explains why.

Gift card value vs Uber Cash: what the balance actually contains

Uber's US terms define Uber Cash as two different things sharing one balance: “a load amount value in the form of an Uber Gift Card”, and “discretionary or ‘bonus’ value provided to you by Uber, without consideration, as a promotion or for appeasement purposes.” The second kind is what you get as a goodwill credit after a bad trip or an order that arrived cold. The two behave differently:

RuleGift card valuePromotional Uber Cash from Uber
Expiry (US)Never expires“May expire as determined by Uber” — you are notified of the date when you receive it
Where it comes fromA gift card someone paid forGiven by Uber without payment
Fees“No fees apply to the Gift Card”Not applicable
Cash out or refundNo, except where required by lawNo
Transfer to another accountNoNo

The practical consequence: a balance that drops overnight without a trip or order is almost always promotional credit expiring, not gift card value disappearing. If gift card value has gone missing, that is a support case — contact Uber through Help in the app with the card code and purchase receipt.

Uber also sells Uber Cash directly, with optional auto-refill: the terms say “your card will be charged the amount you selected every time your Uber Cash drops below $10.” If your balance keeps topping itself up without a gift card, that is auto-refill rather than a gift card being applied.

The account cap: $2,000 or $1,000?

Uber limits how much gift card value one account can hold, and its own pages give two different numbers. Uber's US gift card page, checked on October 28, 2026, says “each Uber account can hold a maximum of $2,000 in total gift card value.” A help-center article published under the same domain says “you can add up to $1,000 in gift card credits to your account.” Other countries set their own limits — Uber's Australian terms define a balance limit of AUD 5,000, and its India help page caps each card at INR 10,000.

Card valueCards to reach a $1,000 capCards to reach a $2,000 cap
$254080
$502040
$1001020
$200510

Card values are the four denominations offered on Uber's US online gift card store on October 28, 2026. The cap only matters if you stockpile: Uber notes that once credits are used, you can add more. If a card refuses to redeem and your Uber Cash balance is already high, spend some of it first, or keep the card unredeemed until the balance falls — US gift card value does not expire, and nothing in Uber's US terms puts a time limit on redeeming the code.

Using the balance on rides and Uber Eats orders

Uber Cash is the default once it holds a balance. Uber's help center says gift cards loaded onto Uber Cash “will apply to your next trip or order by default,” and the US terms say “Uber Cash will be set as your default payment method.” To save it for later:

  1. Enter your destination (or build your Uber Eats basket).
  2. Tap the payment method shown at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Toggle Uber Cash off for this trip or order, or pick a different method.

What the balance can and cannot pay for, per Uber's gift card pages and the US terms:

Whatever is left after a trip or order stays in Uber Cash for the next one. If the fare is larger than the balance, Uber prompts you to add another gift code or charges the rest to your saved payment method.

Expiry, refunds and lost cards: US vs UK vs Australia

Uber publishes separate gift card terms per country, and the rules are not the same. The three English-language versions we checked:

RuleUnited StatesUnited KingdomAustralia

The Australian three-year deadline is the one that catches people out: it runs from activation, not from when you first open the app, so a card that sat in a drawer can lapse before it is ever redeemed. Redeeming it stops the clock for good. In the US, federal gift card rules (Regulation E) separately require that most gift cards carry at least five years before funds can expire; Uber's own US terms are more generous than that and set no expiry on gift card value at all.

Balance-check sites and other scams

Search “Uber gift card balance” and you will find pages offering to check one if you type in the code. Uber runs no such page: the balance only exists after redemption, inside your account. A site that asks for an unredeemed Uber code can do only one useful thing with it — redeem it on someone else's account. The FTC's gift card scam guidance applies:

  • Only ever enter an Uber code in the Uber or Uber Eats app (or on Uber's own website).
  • Nobody legitimate asks to be paid in gift cards — not a government agency, a utility, or “Uber support”.
  • Never read a code out over the phone or send a photo of it. Uber cannot reverse a redemption made by someone else.
  • If it has happened, contact the retailer that sold the card straight away and report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Buying Uber gift cards for a team

Rides and meals are among the most universally useful rewards — a late-night ride home after a release, lunch for a team that stayed on a call. Uber has three purchase routes, and which one you use depends on volume:

RouteVolumeDelivery
Uber's online gift card store (US)Up to 10 cards per order; $25, $50, $100 or $200 eachDigital
Corporate order portalThe store redirects orders of more than 25 cards or over $500Digital
Uber for Business gift card dashboardUp to 1,000 cards per order; credit card on the dashboard, bank transfer via salesUber emails the codes to your recipient list, or you download them; physical cards in the US via sales

Uber for Business also offers vouchers as an alternative: Uber says gift cards are paid upfront and cannot carry restrictions, while vouchers can be limited to rides, meals or both, can be partial, and are paid for only when redeemed. For a reward, a gift card is the better fit; for an event shuttle or a meal allowance, vouchers are.

Three things to plan for before buying for a team:

The country lock. Uber says “gift cards can only be used in the country corresponding to the currency loaded on the card,” and its business gift card page lists twelve countries: Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the US. A distributed team needs a separate batch per currency — the same constraint covered in our guides to buying Amazon gift cards in bulk and Visa gift cards in bulk.

Not everyone uses Uber. Rides and delivery depend on where people live; Uber Cash is also unusable in cities where the apps do not operate. A choice-based reward, where each person picks from a catalogue of brands, avoids sending a ride credit to someone who does not drive into a city.

Tax. In the US a gift card given to an employee is a cash equivalent and taxable as wages whatever the amount — see the IRS rules on gift cards for employees. Other countries have their own thresholds, for example the UK trivial benefits exemption. For programmes that send rewards continuously rather than once a year, a bulk gift card API issues and delivers codes in each recipient's currency automatically; our bulk gift cards buyer's guide compares the options.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my Uber gift card balance?

Redeem the card, then open the Uber or Uber Eats app and go to Account → Wallet. Your gift card value is part of the Uber Cash balance shown there. Tap Uber Cash for a breakdown separating gift card value from promotional credit.

Can I check an Uber gift card balance without redeeming it?

No. Uber offers no card-number-and-PIN balance page; the value appears only after the code is added to an account. Any site claiming to check an unredeemed Uber code is not connected to Uber.

How do I check my Uber Eats gift card balance?

The same way. Uber Eats and Uber share one Uber Cash balance per account: in the Uber Eats app, tap Account → Wallet and read the Uber Cash card. A card redeemed in one app can be spent in the other.

Do Uber gift cards expire?

In the US, gift card value never expires, according to Uber's Uber Cash terms; promotional Uber Cash given by Uber can expire. In Australia, a card must be redeemed within three years of activation, after which the redeemed balance does not expire.

What is the maximum Uber gift card balance?

Uber's US gift card page says each account can hold up to $2,000 in total gift card value; an older help article says $1,000. Australia's limit is AUD 5,000. Once you spend some of your balance, you can add more cards.

Can I use an Uber gift card in another country?

No. Uber gift cards can only be used in the country where they were purchased, in the currency loaded on the card. A US card does not work on trips abroad.

Can I transfer my Uber Cash to someone else?

No. Once a gift card is added to an account its value cannot be transferred. If you want to give it away, pass on the unredeemed code instead.

Why do I need a credit card to use an Uber gift card?

Uber requires a valid payment method on the account at all times for the gift card balance to work. It covers any difference if a fare exceeds your balance; an authorization hold may appear and is voided once the gift card is charged.

Can I use an Uber gift card for scheduled rides?

No. Uber says gift card balances cannot be used for scheduled rides, family profiles or university campus card rides, and cannot pay off outstanding balances.

My Uber gift card says it has already been redeemed. What now?

Uber suggests checking first with friends or family who may have had access to the card. If nobody did, contact the retailer you bought it from with the receipt; Uber cannot replace lost or stolen cards.
