Google Play gift card guide: redeem it, use it, and don't get caught by the country rules

Can you use a US Google Play gift card in another country?
Usually not. Google Play is stricter than most brands here. Under the US terms, gift cards and Play balance are only for users who are at least 13 and resident in the USA. For this purpose, Google counts American Samoa, Guam, the Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands as part of the US. Three rules follow from that:
- Currency must match. The card's currency has to match your Play store currency. A USD card won't redeem on an account set up for euros or pounds.
- Location counts when you redeem. Google's help center says you must be present in the country where the card was bought.
- Location counts when you spend. Play balance can only be used while you're in the country where it was redeemed. Otherwise you get an error like “Your Play balance can only be used in [country].”
Travelling for a few weeks
- Your balance is safe. It stays linked to your US Play country.
- Purchases that use it may fail while you're abroad.
- Google's advice: try again when you're back home.
- Redeem new US cards before you leave, or after you return.
Moving abroad for good
- To change your Play country you must be in the new country and have a payment method from there.
- After a change you must wait at least 90 days before changing again.
- Your US balance stays linked to the US and can't be used in the new country.
- If you switch back to the US later, the balance becomes usable again.
How to redeem a Google Play gift card
Codes are usually 16 characters, mixing letters and numbers. Some emailed or texted codes are a different length.
On an Android phone or tablet
- Open the Google Play app and tap your profile picture at the top right.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Redeem code. On a physical card, Scan gift card saves you typing.
- Enter the code and tap Redeem.
- Check which Google Account will get the balance, then confirm.
On a computer
- Go to play.google.com/redeem.
- Enter the code and click Redeem.
- Review the account that will receive the balance and click Confirm.
During a purchase
At checkout, open the arrow next to the payment method, choose Redeem code and follow the on-screen steps. If your balance doesn't cover the whole purchase, you can pay the rest with another payment method.

| Other gift cards, cash, or topping up another payment method | No |
| Content sold in a currency other than USD | No |
Error messages and what they mean
“There is a problem with that code”
Scan the card instead of typing, or retype it with no spaces or dashes. Still failing? The shop may not have activated it. Google can't activate cards, so contact the retailer.
“This code can only be used in [country]”
You're outside the US, or your payments profile isn't a US one. Redeem after you get home. If you're sure you're in the US, Google has a form for this.
“Already redeemed on a different account”
Check that you're signed in to the account that redeemed it, and ask anyone who could have seen the code. Google won't tell you which account used it.
“You have reached your redemption limit”
The code would take your balance over the limit for your country. Spend some of it, wait 24 hours, then try again.
“Verify your identity”
Google wants to verify your payments profile before you can add balance. If your identity can't be confirmed, Google warns you may lose access to the balance.
Code unreadable or damaged
Try Scan gift card first. Otherwise contact Google Play support with a photo of the back showing the serial number, and your receipt.
