How Netflix gift cards work, and when they don't

What a Netflix gift card actually pays for

Netflix gift cards can only be used for a Netflix streaming subscription. Netflix's help center points to separate payment options for Netflix Shop and Netflix House. Once you redeem a card:

  • The full value goes onto your account as Netflix balance, and your next payments come out of it.
  • Netflix emails you 7 days before the balance runs out, so you can add another card or a payment method.
  • If the balance doesn't cover a full month, your billing period is prorated for the number of days it does cover.
  • If you redeem several cards, the balance adds up and is used one card at a time, in the order you redeemed them.
  • Changing plans changes how fast the balance goes down. That's why the “balance end date” on your account is only an estimate.
  • Some plans, features or promotional offers may not be available with Netflix balance.

How to redeem a Netflix gift card

Scratch the foil off the back of a physical card gently with a coin. For a digital card, the code is in the email. If you got it by text message, tap the redemption link and skip to entering your email address.

You already have Netflix

  1. Go to netflix.com/redeem.
  2. Enter the code and select Redeem.
  3. Enter the email address on your Netflix account.
  4. When you see the confirmation, select Start Watching.

You're new to Netflix

  1. Go to netflix.com/redeem and enter the code.
  2. Enter an email address and create your account.
  3. Choose a plan and create a password.
  4. Add a payment method for when the gift balance runs out, or skip this step.

Using a US Netflix gift card in another country

Netflix decides by currency, not by where the card was sold. Its help center says you can use a gift card bought in another country as long as it's in the same currency as your Netflix bill. A US card is in dollars, so it only works on an account billed in USD.

SituationWhat happens
Your Netflix account is billed in USDThe card redeems normally, even if it was bought somewhere else.
Your account is billed in euros, pounds or any other currencyYou'll see “The gift code does not match the country”. The card won't redeem on that account.
You move abroad with a US accountNetflix keeps charging in the currency of the country where you signed up. To switch to the new country, you cancel and sign up again while you're there, and from then on a USD card won't match your bill.
You use a VPN or proxyNetflix may show a “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy” error. VPNs aren't supported on ad-supported plans or for live events. A VPN also doesn't change your billing currency.

Your catalog, subtitles and maturity ratings can also change by country, so it's worth checking Netflix's “Moving with Netflix” article before a long-term move.

Error messages, decoded

MessageUsual cause and fix
“The code you entered has already been used”The card is already on an account. Check your Payment History or Membership page. If you can't see it, contact Netflix.
“The code entered is not valid”Retype it carefully. If that doesn't work, the shop may not have activated it yet. Wait 24 hours and try again.
“An error occurred during gift redemption” or “Sorry, we are unable to process your request”Go to netflix.com/clearcookies (this signs you out), then try netflix.com/redeem again. If it still fails, wait 24 hours.
“Gift cards and promo codes cannot be used with your current payment method”Your account is billed by Apple or part of a package. See the box above.
“The gift code does not match the country”The card's currency isn't your billing currency.
“Gift and promo codes can't be applied to extra member accounts”The account is paid for by someone else. Use your own account.
Code scratched or unreadableContact Netflix with the card.

Expiry, fees and refunds

Netflix says its gift cards don't expire, and its gift card terms add that cards and balance carry no fees. Cards can't be reloaded and aren't refundable or exchangeable for cash, except where local law requires it. If you cancel while you still have balance, you can keep watching until it's used up.

Netflix doesn't offer a separate balance checker. Netflix's own instructions for checking a card take you to the redeem page. After that, the remaining balance shows on your account's Billing Details or Membership page. Our guide on how to check a Netflix gift card balance covers the details.
