Tax-Free Employee Gifts in Denmark 2026: The 1,400 kr. Limit, the 1,000 kr. Julegave and Why Digital Gift Cards Are Taxed
Last updated: November 2026. All amounts are Danish kroner (kr.). Rules as stated by Skattestyrelsen on skat.dk and in Den juridiske vejledning 2026-2, sections C.A.5.1.4 and C.A.5.5.1, and in ligningsloven §§ 7 U and 16.
The rule: everything is salary, with three exceptions
Den juridiske vejledning opens with the main rule: gifts, prizes and winnings from an employer “sidestilles med arbejdsvederlag” — they are treated as pay, and the employee includes their value in taxable income. A Danish employer who wants to give something tax-free has to fit it into one of three exceptions:
- The small-benefit limit (bagatelgrænsen), ligningsloven § 16, stk. 3, 3rd sentence: 1,400 kr. a year in 2026 for all small benefits combined, with the special 1,000 kr. rule for Christmas gifts in the 4th sentence.
- Usual occasion gifts (lejlighedsgaver) for private milestones — a practice rule with no fixed amount.
- Jubilee and severance gifts, ligningsloven § 7 U: 8,000 kr. a year, excess only.
Christmas parties are a fourth, separate route (personalepleje and company events), covered below.
How the 1,400 kr. and the 1,000 kr. interlock
This is the part most guides get wrong. The 1,000 kr. julegave is not an extra allowance on top of the 1,400 kr. The julegave always counts toward the 1,400 kr. total — but if the total goes over, a julegave of 1,000 kr. or less is carved out and stays untaxed while everything else is taxed in full. Den juridiske vejledning C.A.5.1.4 and skat.dk give these worked examples:
| Julegave | Other gifts / small benefits | Total | Taxable | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 kr. | — | 1,000 kr. | 0 | Under both limits |
| 1,400 kr. | — | 1,400 kr. | 0 | Above the julegave cap, but the 1,400 kr. total is not exceeded |
| 900 kr. | 500 kr. | 1,400 kr. | 0 | Exactly at the limit |
| 900 kr. | 600 kr. | 1,500 kr. | 600 kr. | Limit exceeded; julegave ≤ 1,000 kr. is carved out, the rest is taxed in full |
| 700 kr. | 800 kr. | 1,500 kr. | 800 kr. | Same mechanism (Den juridiske vejledning example) |
| 1,010 kr. | 400 kr. | 1,410 kr. | 1,410 kr. | Limit exceeded and julegave over 1,000 kr. — nothing is protected |
| 1,100 kr. | 600 kr. | 1,700 kr. | 1,700 kr. | Same (Den juridiske vejledning example) |
| 1,100 kr. | 100 kr. | 1,200 kr. | 0 | Julegave over 1,000 kr., but the total is under 1,400 kr. |
Two practical readings fall out of that table:
- If the julegave is the only gift of the year, you can spend up to 1,400 kr. on it. The 1,000 kr. cap only matters once something else pushes the year over 1,400 kr.
- If you run recognition gifts during the year, cap the julegave at 1,000 kr. Then a mid-year spot award that breaks the limit costs tax on the spot award only, not on Christmas too.
Several employers share one limit
The 1,400 kr. applies across all employers. skat.dk's example: 700 kr. from employer A and 800 kr. from employer B make 1,500 kr., so the employee declares the full 1,500 kr. in box (rubrik) 20 of their annual tax return. Neither employer can see the other's gifts, which is why the employee — not the payroll — is responsible for declaring it.
What else counts against the 1,400 kr.
Den juridiske vejledning lists the type of goods the limit is for: flowers, wine and chocolate, a race entry fee, swimming-pool access, an annual pass to a zoo or museum, a ticket to a sporting event the employer does not sponsor. It does not count benefits that have their own regime — work-related benefits (a separate 7,600 kr. limit in 2026), ordinary staff welfare, health treatments, free car, phone and computer, staff loans, and company parties.
Gift cards: the strictest rule in the Nordics
Cash is never covered by the small-benefit limit, whatever the occasion. For a gift card, Den juridiske vejledning requires a case-by-case assessment of whether it is a tingsgave (a gift in kind) or equivalent to cash. It counts as a gift in kind only if the card:
- cannot be exchanged for cash, and
- has a sufficiently limited range of use.
The first condition is where Denmark parts company with its neighbours. The guidance says, in terms: “elektroniske gavekort kan ombyttes til kontanter efter reglerne i betalingsloven” — electronic gift cards can be exchanged for cash under the Payments Act — and because of that “sidestilles med kontanter” and cannot fall under the small-benefit limit. The source it cites is the explanatory notes to the 2021 bill (LFF nr. 161 of 10 February 2021). skat.dk's employee page spells it out: digital gift cards — and it names plastic cards as an example — can always be exchanged for cash, “også selvom du skal betale et gebyr”, even if a fee applies.
Compare that with Norway, which accepts any gift card that cannot be redeemed for cash, or Sweden, where the question is whether the card can be converted to money. In Denmark the electronic format itself is the problem.
| Gift card or voucher | Treatment | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Choice of ~25 specified gifts from an online provider | Gift in kind — inside the limits | SKM2009.302.LSR |
| Up to 20 gift options selected from 20,000+ products based on the employee's profile | Gift in kind | SKM2023.117.SR |
| Gift pre-selected by the employer for each employee | Gift in kind | skat.dk |
| Voucher for one named restaurant: the day's 3-course menu or one of 3 set menus | Gift in kind | SKM2010.515.SR |
| Julegave of max. 700 kr. (then-limit): one hotel night at a limited number of hotels | Gift in kind | SKM2011.677.SR, .678.SR, .679.SR |
| Card to a broad range of experiences: restaurants, inns, hotels, fitness, sport | Taxable, even though it could not be exchanged for cash | SKM2012.193.SR |
| Card limited to the employer's own products, where the range is broad | Taxable | SKM2009.536.SR |
| Department store, supermarket or DIY-chain card | Taxable (A-income) | skat.dk |
| Any digital / electronic gift card, including plastic cards | Taxable (A-income) — equivalent to cash | Den juridiske vejledning C.A.5.1.4; skat.dk |
| Card exchangeable for cash, or cash itself | Taxable (A-income) | LL § 16, stk. 3; skat.dk |
The rulings also make a subtler point: it is not only what a card buys directly that matters, but whether it can be swapped or converted into something else. A hotel-night voucher that can be traded for a general credit is no longer limited. A degree of choice is fine; an open wallet is not.
Occasion gifts: outside the limit, no fixed cap
Lejlighedsgaver — usual gifts for a private milestone such as a round birthday, a christening, a confirmation or a wedding — do not count toward the 1,400 kr. and have no fixed amount. They become fully taxable only if they are bigger than what is “almindeligvis anses for passende”, generally regarded as appropriate for the occasion. A few points from the case law:
- Julegave and birthday gift in the same year both work. In SKM2011.453.SR, Skatterådet confirmed employees could receive a tax-free Christmas gift and a tax-free round-birthday gift in the same year, both in kind.
- Gifts from several units are added up. SKM2015.366.SR: where different units of the same regional employer each gave an occasion gift, they were combined to judge whether the total was appropriate.
- Some work-life events can qualify too. The guidance says finishing an education or retiring on a pension can be tax-free occasions.
- A contractual right kills it. If the employee is entitled to the gift under an agreement, it is a taxable salary supplement.
- The staff association is not the employer. Gifts in kind for a private milestone given by the company's personaleforening were not treated as given by the employer (SKM2011.453.SR).
Jubilee and company-anniversary gifts: 8,000 kr., excess only
Ligningsloven § 7 U is the generous one. Gifts, allowances and gratuities from the employer for an employee's or the company's jubilee are included in taxable income only “med det beløb, hvormed de samlede erhvervelser i løbet af indkomståret overstiger 8.000 kr.” — by the amount the year's total exceeds 8,000 kr. Three things make it different from the small-benefit limit:
- It can be cash. § 7 U covers gratialer, so a jubilee bonus on the payslip qualifies. A digital gift card does too, because the rule does not depend on the gift being in kind.
- Only the excess is taxed. A 10,000 kr. jubilee gratuity is 8,000 kr. tax-free and 2,000 kr. taxable — no cliff.
- Strict dates. The employee's employment must have lasted 25, 35 or a larger number of years divisible by 5 (40, 45, 50…). For a company anniversary, the business must have existed for 25 years or a multiple of 25, and skat.dk adds that all full-time employees must receive the same amount, part-timers a proportional share.
The recipient must be employed as a wage earner by the company that pays. The same 8,000 kr. covers severance (fratrædelsesgodtgørelse), and both are capped per income year in total, so a 25th anniversary and a departure in the same year share one 8,000 kr.
The maximum in a jubilee year
Stacking the fixed limits, an employee celebrating 25 years can receive 9,400 kr. tax-free in 2026: 8,000 kr. under § 7 U plus 1,400 kr. of small benefits (including the julegave). A usual round-birthday gift and a reasonable julefrokost come on top, because neither counts toward either limit.
Julefrokost: tax-free — but a gift instead of one is not
A Christmas lunch paid wholly or partly by the employer is not taxed when it is of reasonable scope and duration. It does not have to be held at the workplace: skat.dk accepts a restaurant, and a virtual julefrokost where food is delivered to employees' homes and they share online entertainment — stand-up or music — is still tax-free.
The trap is the substitute. If the company skips the party and sends each employee a gift instead, it is “ikke tale om et skattefrit julefrokostarrangement”: the gift is an ordinary gift that has to fit inside the 1,400 kr. along with the julegave and everything else that year.
What cash costs instead
A cash gift or a taxable gift card is A-income: the employer withholds A-tax and the 8% labour-market contribution (am-bidrag). Using the 2026 rates from skat.dk and the national average municipal tax from Danmarks Statistik, the marginal tax on an extra krone of pay is:
| Employee's band (2026) | Rate on income after am-bidrag | Marginal incl. 8% am-bidrag | Gross pay for 1,000 kr. net | vs 1,000 kr. gift |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Below 641,200 kr. (bundskat + municipal) | 12.01% + 25.05% = 37.06% | 42.1% | 1,727 kr. | 1.73× |
| 641,200–777,900 kr. (+ mellemskat 7.5%) | 44.56% | 49.0% | 1,961 kr. | 1.96× |
Employer cost of delivering 1,000 kr. of value
For a 100-person team, a 1,000 kr. julegave in kind costs 100,000 kr. Matching it with a net 1,000 kr. in cash for bottom-band employees costs about 172,700 kr. The thresholds are after am-bidrag; the figures ignore church tax (0.87% on average), personal allowances and employment deductions, and the 2026 topskat and toptopskat bands. Your municipality's rate will differ from the 25.05% average.
VAT and corporate deduction
- No input VAT. Momsloven § 42, stk. 1 denies the deduction of VAT on purchases relating to “naturalaflønning af virksomhedens personale” (no. 3) and “repræsentation og gaver” (no. 5). At the 25% standard rate, 200 kr. of a 1,000 kr. gift is VAT the company cannot recover — and still part of the gift's value for the employee.
- Corporate tax deduction: yes. skat.dk states that the employer can deduct the cost of the gift in its tax accounts, for small gifts and jubilee gifts alike (the latter as an operating expense).
Reporting: who tells Skattestyrelsen
| Situation | Employer | Employee |
|---|---|---|
| Gifts in kind, each under 1,400 kr. | No reporting, even if the year's total exceeds 1,400 kr. | Declares the full total in rubrik 20 if it exceeds 1,400 kr. |
| A single gift in kind worth more than 1,400 kr. | Reports it as a personalegode (B-income; skat.dk: without am-bidrag) | Taxed on the value the employer reports |
| Cash or a taxable gift card | Reports as A-income, withholds A-tax and am-bidrag | Taxed through payroll |
The limits over time, and what changes in 2027
Skattestyrelsen's published rates (skat.dk, Satser) for the last six years:
| Year | Small-benefit limit | Julegave cap | Work-related benefits limit | Jubilee / severance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 1,200 kr. | 900 kr. | 6,600 kr. | 8,000 kr. |
| 2023 | 1,300 kr. | 900 kr. | 6,700 kr. | 8,000 kr. |
| 2024 | 1,300 kr. | 900 kr. | 7,000 kr. | 8,000 kr. |
| 2025 | 1,400 kr. | 1,000 kr. | 7,300 kr. | 8,000 kr. |
| 2026 | 1,400 kr. | 1,000 kr. | 7,600 kr. | 8,000 kr. |
| 2027 | 1,500 kr. | 1,000 kr. | 7,800 kr. | 8,000 kr. |
Small-benefit limit, 2010 base to 2027
Three things the series shows (our reading):
- Indexation has added 40% and 43%. Against the 2010 statutory bases of 1,000 kr. and 700 kr., the 2026 amounts are 1.40× and 1.43×.
- The jubilee amount has not moved. § 7 U's 8,000 kr. is a fixed figure and stays at 8,000 kr. in 2027 while the small-benefit limit climbs.
- In 2027 the gap widens. The small-benefit limit goes to 1,500 kr. but the julegave cap stays at 1,000 kr. — so the julegave carve-out covers 67% of the allowance instead of 71%. Budget for 2027 by raising year-round recognition, not the Christmas gift.
Checklist for a Danish gift programme
- Count every gift per person per calendar year — julegave, summer gift, flowers, spot awards. The 1,400 kr. is a total, and crossing it taxes the lot.
- Keep the julegave at or below 1,000 kr. incl. moms if anything else is given during the year.
- Do not use digital or plastic gift cards for tax-free gifts. Use a physical gift, an employer-chosen item, or a gift portal with a short list of specified gifts.
- Check whether the portal lets employees convert their choice into a general credit. If it does, the limitation is gone.
- Use § 7 U for 25, 35, 40, 45 and 50 years — 8,000 kr., cash allowed, excess only. Not for 10 or 20 years.
- Hold the julefrokost, physically or virtually. A gift instead of a party is just a gift.
- Run digital gift cards through payroll as A-income if you use them — they are legal, just taxable.
- Write off the VAT on staff gifts in the budget; it is not recoverable.
Rewarding a team that spans Denmark and other countries?
Rewordin delivers digital gift cards to employees in one run, with each country's rules in view. We will be straight about Denmark: under Skattestyrelsen's guidance a digital gift card is A-income there, so Danish recipients go through payroll — while the same card can be tax-free for colleagues in Norway or Ireland. Bulk delivery runs through our gift card API, and the reward catalogue lets each employee pick the brand they want.
Frequently asked questions
How much can an employer give an employee tax-free in Denmark in 2026?
1,400 kr. a year in gifts and small benefits combined. A Christmas or New Year gift in kind of up to 1,000 kr. stays tax-free even if the total goes over 1,400 kr. Occasion gifts for private milestones and jubilee gifts of up to 8,000 kr. come on top.
Is a julegave of 1,400 kr. tax-free?
Yes, if it is the only gift or small benefit the employee receives that year. skat.dk's example: a 1,400 kr. julegave with no other benefits is not taxed. If anything else is given, the julegave must be 1,000 kr. or less to stay protected.
Are gift cards tax-free for employees in Denmark?
Rarely. Den juridiske vejledning treats electronic gift cards as exchangeable for cash under the Payments Act, so they are taxable. A voucher can still qualify if it cannot be exchanged for cash and is limited to a few specified gifts or one named service — for example a gift portal with around 20–25 options.
What happens if the 1,400 kr. limit is exceeded?
The full value of all small benefits is taxed, not just the excess — except a julegave of up to 1,000 kr., which stays tax-free. Jubilee gifts are different: there only the amount above 8,000 kr. is taxed.
Is a cash Christmas bonus tax-free in Denmark?
No. Cash is never covered by the small-benefit limit or the julegave rule. It is A-income with A-tax and 8% am-bidrag.
Is a gift for 10 years of service tax-free?
Not as a jubilee or occasion gift. § 7 U only covers 25, 35, 40, 45 and 50 years and so on, and Skatterådet taxed a 2,500 kr. 10-year gift in full (SKM2011.139.SR). It can only be tax-free inside the ordinary 1,400 kr. allowance.
Does the julefrokost count toward the 1,400 kr.?
No. A reasonable Christmas lunch, including a virtual one with food delivered at home, is tax-free and outside the limit. A gift given instead of a julefrokost does count.
Can the company deduct VAT on employee Christmas gifts?
No. Momsloven § 42, stk. 1, nos. 3 and 5 deny input VAT on payment in kind to staff and on gifts. The cost of the gift itself is deductible for corporate tax.
What is the limit in 2027?
skat.dk lists 1,500 kr. for small benefits in 2027, with the julegave cap unchanged at 1,000 kr. and the jubilee amount at 8,000 kr.
Methodology and sources
Every figure in this guide was verified against the following on 6 November 2026:
- Ligningsloven (LBK nr. 1500 of 2025, retsinformation.dk): § 16, stk. 3 — the 1,000 kr. and 700 kr. bases at 2010 level, the whole-value rule, the 5,500 kr. work-related base and indexation under personskatteloven § 20; § 7 U — the 8,000 kr. excess-only rule and the 25 / 35 / divisible-by-5 and 25-year company conditions
- Den juridiske vejledning 2026-2, C.A.5.1.4 “Bagatelgrænsen for mindre personalegoder” (info.skat.dk): the 1,400 / 1,000 kr. amounts, the worked examples, the two gift-card conditions, electronic gift cards under the Payments Act (citing LFF nr. 161 of 10 February 2021), the choice-based rulings, the reporting rule, and the benefits outside the limit
- Den juridiske vejledning 2026-2, C.A.5.5.1: the main rule, lov nr. 554 of 1 June 2011, occasion gifts, the 2021 experience gift-card rule, and the rulings SKM2008.784.SR, SKM2009.302.LSR, SKM2009.536.SR, SKM2010.515.SR, SKM2011.139.SR, SKM2011.453.SR, SKM2011.677–679.SR, SKM2012.193.SR and SKM2015.366.SR
- skat.dk, “Gaver fra arbejdsgiver”: the julegave table, the two-employer example and rubrik 20, the tax-free and taxable gift-card lists, reporting as A- or B-income, julefrokost and virtual julefrokost, gifts instead of a julefrokost, jubilee and company-anniversary conditions, and corporate deductibility
- skat.dk, Satser: small-benefit, julegave, work-related and jubilee amounts for 2022–2027; 2026 am-bidrag 8%, bundskat 12.01%, mellemskat 7.5% above 641,200 kr., topskat 7.5% above 777,900 kr.
- Danmarks Statistik, table PSKAT: average municipal tax rate 25.05% and church tax 0.87% for the whole country, 2026
- Momsloven (LBK nr. 209 of 2024, retsinformation.dk): § 33 (25% rate) and § 42, stk. 1, nos. 3 and 5
Derived figures are ours. The 523 kr. cliff, the marginal rates, the 1.73× and 1.96× multipliers, the 100-employee example, the 9,400 kr. jubilee-year stack, the indexation ratios and the 2027 shares are calculated from the sources above. They assume the employee's employment deductions are already used up and ignore church tax, so treat them as representative, not as a payslip. For the cliff example we apply income tax only, because skat.dk describes a reported gift in kind as B-income without am-bidrag. This guide is general information, not tax advice; for a specific programme, confirm with your revisor or Skattestyrelsen, or ask for a bindende svar.
