Visa prepaid gift cards, explained: where they work, what they cost, and what trips them up

Do these four things before you spend it

  • Find the issuer on the back of the card, or in the email for a digital card. That's who you call about the balance, fees, a lost card or a decline.
  • Register it if the issuer lets you. Visa calls this always a good idea, because some issuers only replace registered cards. It also gives you a billing address to use at online checkouts.
  • Check the balance with the toll-free number on the back or on the issuer's website, using the card number and security code.
  • Read the front of the card for “Valid only in the United States” and the card's expiration date.

Where a Visa gift card works, and where it gets awkward

Most everyday purchases go through without a problem. The trouble comes from merchants that authorize more than the final bill, because a gift card can't go over its balance. Visa's own FAQs flag these situations:

WhereWhat happens, and what to do
Gas pumpsPaying at the pump usually works, but it can fail. Fix: pay inside the station instead.
Hotels and car rentalsThey often want a credit card and place a hold, so part of your balance can be locked up. Fix: pay the final bill with the gift card, and use another card for the deposit.
Restaurants and salonsVisa notes that tip authorizations can add up to 20% to the bill. Fix: leave enough balance to cover the tip, or pay the tip another way.
Online storesCheckout asks for the card number, expiration date and CVV. Fix: check that the balance covers the full total, including shipping and tax.

Using a US Visa gift card in another country

Visa gift cards aren't locked to an account the way an Amazon or Apple balance is. Whether a card works abroad depends on how the issuer set it up, and the card tells you:

Says “Valid only in the United States”

  • A domestic-use-only card
  • Won't work outside the US, including on trips
  • Works at many US locations that accept Visa Debit
  • Spend it before you travel

No US-only wording

  • May work abroad, depending on the issuer
  • The balance stays in USD, so foreign purchases are converted
  • Check the cardholder agreement for foreign-transaction or conversion fees
  • A VPN changes nothing: approval depends on the card and the merchant, not your IP address

Digital Visa gift cards

Visa's gift card page lists sellers that offer virtual Visa gift cards by email, some delivered within minutes. Some, such as Vanilla eGift cards, can be added to a digital wallet. Treat a digital card the same as a plastic one: the number, expiry date and CVV are the money, so don't forward the email to anyone you wouldn't hand cash to.

When a Visa gift card is declined

  1. The amount is over the balance. Check the balance, then split the payment or lower the total.
  2. A hold is tying up funds. Hotels, rentals, pumps and tips can lock up more than the final bill.
  3. The address doesn't match. Some online checkouts check the billing address. Use the one you registered with the issuer.
  4. You're outside the US with a domestic-use-only card.
  5. The card wasn't activated when it was bought. Call the issuer with your receipt.

For step-by-step balance checks by issuer, read our guide on how to check a Visa gift card balance. Lost the card? Call the issuer's toll-free number straight away. You'll need the card number to cancel and replace it.

Visa gift card FAQ

Can I use a Visa gift card on Amazon or for subscriptions?

Visa gift cards work wherever Visa Debit is accepted online, as long as the balance covers the charge. For repeat charges, make sure enough balance is left each time, because you can't reload the card.

Does a US Visa gift card work in Europe or Mexico?

Not if it says “Valid only in the United States”. Otherwise it depends on the issuer. Check the cardholder agreement, including any foreign-transaction fees.

Do Visa gift cards expire?

The plastic has an expiration date, but under federal rules the funds must last at least five years. If the card expires first, you can ask the issuer for a free replacement.

Can I add money to a Visa gift card?

No. Visa says its gift cards can't be reloaded. Reloadable prepaid cards are a separate product.

Can I withdraw cash at an ATM?

That depends on the issuer and the cardholder agreement. Check the terms that came with the card before you try.

Are Visa gift cards taxable when an employer gives them?

Generally, yes. The IRS treats gift cards as cash equivalents. See our article on gift card tax rules for employees and the achievement award tax checker. Buying for a team?
