A Home Depot gift card goes toward merchandise across the store — tools, materials, appliances, garden supplies — which makes it a practical gift for anyone working on a home. The rules are short. The traps are mostly about where the card doesn’t work and who is asking you to buy one.

Can I use it in Canada or Mexico?
The Home Depot runs more than 2,300 stores across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, which is why this question comes up so often. But the U.S. gift card page is explicit: apply the card at any Home Depot store in the U.S., and it can only be used at The Home Depot stores or on homedepot.com. Home Depot Canada (homedepot.ca) and The Home Depot México are listed as separate sites with their own programs, so a U.S. card isn’t a way to pay there. If you’re in a U.S. territory, ask the local store before relying on the card.

How to redeem it
In store
- Bring the plastic card, or the eGift Card email with the card number and PIN.
- Tell the cashier you’re paying with a gift card; any remaining amount goes on another payment method.
- Keep the card until the balance is used up — it’s also how you reload it later.
On homedepot.com
- Sign in to (or create) a Home Depot account — Home Depot requires a valid account to redeem online.
- At checkout, open the Payment step and choose apply a gift card.
- Enter the card number and the PIN from under the scratch-off (or from the eGift email), then place the order.
What it can’t pay for
Home Depot gift cards are for merchandise at The Home Depot. They can’t be used to buy other prepaid or specialty gift cards, and other businesses don’t take them. That last rule is the core of Home Depot’s scam warning:
Two more of Home Depot’s rules: don’t buy, sell or check the balance on online marketplaces outside Home Depot stores and homedepot.com, and never give a card number over the phone or by email to someone you don’t know. Ads offering free Home Depot gift cards are another red flag. Report scams at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Expiry, fees and the federal rules
Home Depot says there are no fees and the gift card value never expires. Federal law sets a lower bar — under 12 CFR 1005.20, store gift card funds can’t expire within five years of issue or the last load, and inactivity fees are only allowed after a year of no use — so Home Depot’s policy is the stronger protection, and topping a card up never puts an old balance at risk.
Returns and gifts
Items paid for with a gift card are returned under Home Depot’s normal return policy, so keep the receipt. If you’re giving a gift, ask for a gift receipt — Home Depot says a cashier can print one, self-checkout can print one, and online orders don’t need one because the order is tied to the buyer’s account.
