How to Check Your Target Gift Card Balance (2026 Guide)

Target is one of the few big retailers that still lets you read a balance without signing in — two numbers on a public page and you have the answer in about twenty seconds. The whole difficulty is the second number. Here is where the access number hides, how to get a replacement emailed to you when the silver strip is ruined, why an eGiftCard has no strip to scratch at all, and why the prepaid Visa card you bought at Target is not a Target GiftCard and will fail on that page every time.

Quick Answer

Fastest, no account needed: go to target.com/giftcard/check-balance and enter the 15-digit card number and the access number. On a physical card both sit under the silver strip on the back — scratch it off gently. No sign-in, no app.

By phone: call 1-800-544-2943. The automated line reads out your balance and your last five transactions, which is the only route that tells you where the money went.

Access number destroyed, or an eGiftCard with nothing to scratch? Sign in on Target.com (not the app — it can't do this), open My Target → Gift cards, find the card and select Get access number. Target emails it to the address on your account.

Holding a Visa, Mastercard or American Express card you bought at Target? That is not a Target GiftCard and Target's page will reject it. Skip to the section on prepaid cards.

Find the 15-digit card number and the access number

A Target GiftCard is identified by two numbers working as a pair, and on a physical card both are deliberately concealed until you buy it:

  1. Turn the card over. Target's own instruction is to “gently remove the metallic strip on the back of your gift card to reveal both the card and the access numbers” — the strip covers the pair together, not just one of them.
  2. The card number is 15 digits. The second number is the access number, which Target also calls a PIN; both names refer to the same thing and you will see the two used interchangeably across Target's help pages.
  3. Use the edge of a coin, not a key or a fingernail. A gouged digit is the single most common reason the balance page rejects a card that has money on it.

Photograph the back before you start spending. The card number is what identifies the card to Target if anything goes wrong, and the access number is what proves you are the one holding it. Once a card is empty the pair is worthless to a thief, but for as long as it carries value both numbers together are the money.

2

Check the balance online with no account

This is the route most people want, and Target — unlike Starbucks, and unlike Amazon — actually publishes it:

  1. Go to target.com/giftcard/check-balance. Target also links the same form from target.com/guest/gift-card-balance.
  2. Type the 15-digit card number in the first field and the access number in the second.
  3. Submit. The remaining balance appears on the page. No sign-in is required — the form is open to guests, which is exactly what the word guest in that second URL is telling you.

Check the domain before you type anything. Because a legitimate no-sign-in checker exists for this brand, the search results for it are unusually thick with imitations that look identical. The only page that should ever receive your Target card number and access number is on target.com. If the address bar says anything else — a lookalike spelling, a “gift card balance checker” aggregator, an app store listing — close it. A card number plus an access number is spendable money, and it is drained within minutes of being harvested.

3

Or read it inside your Target account or app

If the card is already saved to your Target account you never need the numbers again. The two paths differ slightly, which trips people up:

WherePathNeeds the access number?
Target appAccount → My Target → Settings → Gift cardsNo — for cards already saved
Target.comAccount/Name → My Target → Gift cardsNo — for cards already saved

Both screens list every card in your wallet with its current balance side by side, which is the practical way to handle a drawer full of part-spent cards.

4

Or call the automated line for the last five transactions

Call 1-800-544-2943 with the card in front of you. Target states that this line lets you “check your Target GiftCard balance and hear your last five transactions”.

That second half is why the phone route is worth knowing even though the website is faster. The online checker returns a single number. If your question is not “how much is left” but “why is there less left than I expected”, the phone line is the only route that answers it — and it is the first thing to try before assuming a card has been compromised. Nine times in ten the missing money is a purchase someone in the household forgot to mention.

No access number? Three ways out

The access number is where nearly every failed balance check actually goes wrong. Three situations, three different fixes:

SituationWhat to doWhere
Strip scratched too hard, digits illegibleSave the card to your Target account by number, then use Get access numberTarget.com only
eGiftCard or Mobile GiftCard — nothing to scratchOpen the card inside your Target account; request the access number the same wayTarget.com only
Card number itself is unreadableNothing self-service works — contact Target Guest Services with your purchase receiptPhone

The Get access number function is the one most people never find. Target documents it as: access your Target account, go to Account/Name, select My Target, select Gift cards, “find the Target GiftCard you wish to use, then select Get access number” — and “the Target GiftCard access number will be emailed to the email tied to your Target account”.

This does not work in the Target app. Target states plainly that “Target GiftCard access numbers cannot currently be requested in the Target App”. If you are tapping around the app looking for it, you are looking for something that is not there — open Target.com in a browser instead. This one line resolves a large share of the frustration behind this search.

eGiftCards and Mobile (text) GiftCards: what changes

Target sells the same value in three wrappers: a physical card, an eGiftCard delivered by email, and a Mobile GiftCard delivered by text. All three can be bought in store, on Target.com or in the app. Two things about the digital pair matter for balance checking:

  • A Target account is not optional. Target requires one to access and redeem email and text gift cards, in store or online. The delivery message is a pointer to the card, not the card itself — you open it inside your account, and from that moment the balance lives on the Gift cards screen rather than in your inbox.
  • There is no silver strip. Nothing to scratch means nothing to ruin, but it also means the numbers are not printed on anything you are holding. The guest checker still works for a digital card — you just have to pull the access number out of your account with Get access number first, as above.

One practical limit worth planning around if you receive a lot of these: Target allows 20 Target GiftCards in a guest wallet in total. A steady drip of small eGiftCards fills that up faster than you would think.

The cards sold at Target that are not Target GiftCards

This is the single biggest source of “the Target balance page says my card is invalid”, and it is not a fault at all. Target sells racks of third-party cards — Visa, Mastercard and American Express prepaid cards, plus restaurant, gaming and streaming brands. None of them are Target GiftCards. They carry a different card system, a different balance checker and a different phone number:

Card in your handWhere to check the balancePhone
Target GiftCard (bullseye logo, 15-digit number)target.com/giftcard/check-balance1-800-544-2943
Visa or Mastercard prepaid bought at Targetmybalancenow.com — also where you set a PIN1-877-867-4873
American Express prepaid bought at Targetbalance.amexgiftcard.com1-833-792-5087
Another brand's card bought at Target (restaurant, gaming, streaming)That brand's own balance page — Target does not hold the balanceThat brand's line

The distinction has consequences beyond balance checking. A network-branded prepaid card spends anywhere Visa, Mastercard or American Express is accepted, where a Target GiftCard spends only at Target. But at Target itself the third-party cards are more restricted: only one third-party gift card can be applied to an order, it cannot be combined with a credit card in the same transaction, and a Target GiftCard cannot be used to buy one in the first place. Our guide to checking a Visa gift card balance covers the network-branded side in full, including the pre-authorisation holds that make those balances read wrong at gas pumps and restaurants.

Where a Target GiftCard works — and the six places it doesn't

A Target GiftCard is accepted at any Target store, on Target.com and in the app. Two in-store tenants also take it: Starbucks locations inside Target stores and Target Café. Target Optical takes it too, but in store only — the online Optical checkout will not accept one.

What a Target GiftCard cannot buy is a specific, published list:

  • Other Target GiftCards
  • American Express, Visa and Mastercard prepaid gift cards
  • iTunes gift cards
  • Specialty gift cards — gaming, restaurants and similar
  • Digital video game downloads
  • Target Circle Card payments (you cannot pay a card bill with it)
  • Services at MinuteClinic
  • Online purchases at Target Optical

The pattern behind the list is worth naming: almost everything on it is a cash-equivalent. Blocking gift-card-buys-gift-card is a standard anti-laundering and anti-fraud control across the whole retail sector, not a Target quirk.

A related gotcha for Circle Card holders. The 5% Target Circle Card discount does not apply to buying gift cards — not Target GiftCards, not the prepaid Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, and not Starbucks cards bought at a Starbucks inside a Target store. It applies when you spend, not when you load. Buying a stack of gift cards to earn 5% on them does not work.

The redemption rules that surprise people

RuleThe numberWhat it means in practice
Gift cards per transaction10In stores or online. Clearing eleven small cards means two trips through checkout
Gift cards saved in a wallet20Spend the small ones down before adding more, or new cards have nowhere to go
Payment orderGift card firstTarget states the GiftCard is “always used as first type of tender before charging a credit/debit card”
ReloadingNot possibleTarget GiftCards are not reloadable — a spent card is finished, you buy a new one
Denominations$5–$500Any amount in that range in store; online, set values plus a custom amount in the same range

The payment-order rule is the one that generates complaints. If a gift card is attached to your account and you check out expecting to pay by credit card, the gift card goes first automatically. That is not a bug and it is not reversible after the fact — remove the card from the order before you place it if you were saving it for something else.

Expiration, fees, and cash back

Target's position is short and unusually generous: “Target GiftCards don't expire, and don't lose value over time” — and Target adds that this holds even if an expiration date is printed on the card. Old cards found in a drawer are still money.

That sits comfortably above the legal floor. Under the federal Credit CARD Act rules implemented in Regulation E §1005.20, funds on a US retail gift card must remain valid for at least five years from the date they were loaded, and dormancy or inactivity fees are barred unless the card has gone unused for a full year and the fees are clearly disclosed. Target simply declines to apply either clock. The same is true of the other major retail and digital-store cards — Amazon and Apple both run no expiry and no dormancy fee.

Cash back is the mirror image. A gift card balance is not redeemable for cash as a matter of policy, but a number of US states require a merchant to cash out a small remaining balance on request — California's threshold is under $10, and several other states set their own. If you are sitting on a $2.14 remnant, ask; otherwise split the payment and use it up.

Troubleshooting: rejected numbers, missing money, a $0 card

The balance page rejects the numbers

Work through this order. First, confirm it is actually a Target GiftCard and not a prepaid Visa, Mastercard or American Express card — see the table above; this is the most common cause by a distance. Second, re-read the access number: a partly scratched digit where an 8 reads as a 6 will fail every time. Third, count the card number — it should be 15 digits. If all three check out, request a fresh access number by email using Get access number on Target.com.

A brand-new card shows $0

Rack cards are activated at the register when they are paid for, and occasionally the activation does not register against the card. Take the card and the receipt back to the store that sold it. The receipt is the proof of load, and without it there is very little anyone can do — which is the practical reason to keep gift card receipts until the card is spent.

The balance is lower than it should be

Call 1-800-544-2943 before you assume fraud, because that line reads out the last five transactions. Ordinary explanations first: a household member spending the same card, or the payment-order rule above quietly applying a saved gift card to an online order you thought you had paid for by credit card. If the transactions genuinely are not yours, the card number and access number have been compromised — typically skimmed from a tampered rack card before purchase, or phished through a fake balance-check page. Contact Target Guest Services immediately and have your purchase receipt ready.

I paid with a gift card and then returned the item

Refunds go back to the original form of payment, so a purchase made with a Target GiftCard is refunded to a gift card rather than to cash or a bank card. Keep whatever card the refund lands on — and note that its value is subject to the same no-expiry rule, so there is no rush to spend it.

The card worked in store but not on Target.com

Check what you are buying. Target Optical is in-store only for gift cards, and the excluded list in the section above — other gift cards, iTunes cards, digital game downloads — is enforced at the online checkout. A card that is fine at a register can be refused for a basket containing one of those items.

The scam that targets this exact card

Gift cards remain one of the payment methods fraudsters demand most often, and big-box retail cards are named by scammers more than almost any other kind. US consumers reported $12.5 billion in fraud losses to the Federal Trade Commission in 2024, a 25% jump on the previous year, with gift cards persistently among the named payment methods.

The rule that defeats all of it is short:

  • No legitimate organisation is ever paid in gift cards. Not the IRS, not Social Security, not a utility, not “Microsoft support”, not a police department, not your employer's CEO emailing to ask for cards to surprise a client.
  • Never read a card number and access number to anyone by phone, text, email or chat. A shared pair is typically drained within minutes.
  • Inspect the silver strip before you pay. Never buy a card whose strip is already scratched, scuffed, or covered by a replacement sticker — that is the signature of a skimmed card put back on the rack.
  • Only ever type those digits on target.com. The existence of a genuine no-sign-in checker is precisely what makes fake ones effective for this brand.
  • If it has already happened, contact Target Guest Services at once — funds are occasionally recoverable if the card has not been spent — and report it at consumer.ftc.gov/gift-card-scams and ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Buying Target gift cards for a team

If you are here because you are handing Target cards to staff rather than checking one of your own, the shape of the problem changes. Target runs an official corporate programme on its corporate and bulk gift cards page, covering both physical cards for welcome kits and events and digital cards for instant email delivery — the standard split for any employee gift card programme.

Three things to plan for. First, the wallet and transaction limits above apply to your recipients, not to you — 20 cards in a wallet and 10 per transaction is generous for an annual award and tight for a weekly micro-recognition programme that runs for a year. Second, tax: in the US a gift card given to an employee is a cash equivalent and therefore taxable wages regardless of amount — the de minimis exclusion that covers a holiday turkey does not cover a $25 Target card. Our guide to the IRS rules on gift cards for employees works through the gross-up arithmetic. Third, reach: Target operates only in the United States, so a Target card is a domestic reward. The moment your team spans borders it becomes a card that half your people cannot spend, which is the problem a multi-brand catalogue exists to solve.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check a Target gift card balance without an account?

Yes. Target publishes a guest balance checker at target.com/giftcard/check-balance that needs only the 15-digit card number and the access number — no sign-in. The automated phone line on 1-800-544-2943 also works without an account. An account is only required for email and text gift cards, and for requesting a replacement access number.

Where is the access number on a Target gift card?

Under the silver strip on the back, next to the 15-digit card number — Target's instruction is to gently scratch the strip to reveal both. On an eGiftCard or Mobile GiftCard there is no strip; you open the card in your Target account and use Get access number instead.

Can I check the balance if the access number is scratched off or damaged?

Yes, but not on the guest page. Sign in on Target.com, go to My Target → Gift cards, find the card and select Get access number — Target emails it to the address on your account. This cannot be done in the Target app, only on the website.

What is the phone number to check a Target gift card balance?

1-800-544-2943. The line gives the balance and reads out the last five transactions on the card, which the website does not.

Do Target gift cards expire?

No. Target states that its GiftCards do not expire and do not lose value over time, even if a date is printed on the card. There are no activation, dormancy or inactivity fees either — which is more generous than the five-year federal minimum for US gift cards.

Why does target.com say my gift card number is invalid?

Most often because it is not a Target GiftCard. Prepaid Visa and Mastercard cards bought at Target are checked at mybalancenow.com (1-877-867-4873) and American Express cards at balance.amexgiftcard.com (1-833-792-5087). If it genuinely is a Target GiftCard, the next likely cause is a misread digit in the access number.

Can I reload a Target gift card?

No. Target GiftCards are not reloadable. When the balance is spent the card is finished — buy a new one rather than trying to top it up.

How many Target gift cards can I use on one order?

Up to 10 per transaction, in stores or online. Separately, a maximum of 20 Target GiftCards can be held in a guest wallet at once. Only one third-party gift card may be applied to an order, and it cannot be combined with a credit card in the same transaction.

Can I get cash back from a Target gift card?

Generally no — the balance is not redeemable for cash as a matter of policy. Several US states require merchants to cash out small remaining balances on request; California's threshold is under $10. Elsewhere, use the remainder as a split payment.

Can I use a Target gift card at Starbucks?

At a Starbucks located inside a Target store, yes, and at Target Café. Not at a standalone Starbucks — that needs a Starbucks Card, and checking a Starbucks balance works completely differently, with no guest checker at all.

Does the Target Circle Card 5% discount apply to gift cards?

No. Buying gift cards is excluded from the 5% discount — Target GiftCards, prepaid Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, and Starbucks cards bought inside a Target store are all outside it. The discount applies to what you buy with the card, not to loading it.

Someone asked me to pay them with Target gift cards. Is that a scam?

Yes, every time, without exception. No government agency, utility, bank, tech-support line, employer or debt collector accepts gift cards as payment. If you have already shared the numbers, contact Target Guest Services immediately and report it at consumer.ftc.gov/gift-card-scams.
