How to Check Your Sephora Gift Card Balance (2026): 4 Ways, and the One Card With No Online Check

Sephora issues three different pieces of plastic that all say Sephora on the front, and only two of them can be checked online. If the card in your hand has a 16-digit number and no PIN, it is a store merchandise credit — Sephora's own policy is that its balance can only be checked in person at a Sephora store. Every “5 easy ways” article on the subject misses that, and most of them print the wrong phone number too.

Work out which of the three cards you are holding

This is the step everyone skips, and it is the one that decides whether the next three steps will work at all. Sephora's gift card FAQ defines exactly three instruments, and it separates them by a single detail: whether there is a PIN.

What you are holdingNumbers on itCan the balance be checked online?
Physical gift card (bought in store, on sephora.com, or on a retail rack)16-digit card number + 8-digit PIN, under a foil panelYes — online, in the app, by phone or in store
eGift card (emailed; bought on sephora.com, sephora.ca or an authorised retailer)16-digit card number + 8-digit PIN, at the bottom of the card once openedYes — same four routes
Store merchandise credit (issued for a return)16-digit card number, no PIN at allNo. In person at a Sephora store only

Sephora's wording on the third row is unambiguous: “Store Merchandise Credits: physical cards that have a 16-digit card number. There is no PIN”, and later, “The balance of a store merchandise credit can only be checked in person at a Sephora store.” If that is your card, stop here and read the merchandise-credit section — the online form will reject it, because the PIN field is mandatory.

2

Find the 16-digit number and the 8-digit PIN

Both numbers are needed. The online form has two inputs and neither is optional — the card number field accepts up to 19 characters so the digits can be grouped, and the PIN field is capped at exactly 8.

  1. Physical card: the 16-digit number and 8-digit PIN sit on the back under a scratch-off foil panel. Sephora's instruction is to use a coin or a fingernail — and, in its own words, to “leave clear sticker tape in place”. That clear tape is not packaging; it is what stops the printed digits lifting off with the foil.
  2. eGift card: the email you received is only a notification. Click through to the card itself, and the 16-digit number and 8-digit PIN sit at the bottom of the eGift card after opening. If the link is gone, the eGift section covers the reissue.
  3. Merchandise credit: the 16-digit number is printed plainly on the card. There is no PIN to find, and that is the answer rather than a fault.
3

Check the balance at sephora.com/giftcards

Sephora does not publish a standalone balance-check page. The checker is a panel on the gift card landing page, which is why people hunt for a URL that does not exist:

  1. Open sephora.com/giftcards. It resolves to sephora.com/beauty/giftcards, titled Shop Sephora Gift Cards and Check Gift Card Balance.
  2. Scroll to the panel headed Check Balance & Add to Wallet, or use the Check Balance button near the top of the page — it simply jumps to the same panel further down.
  3. Type the 16-digit card number and the 8-digit PIN.
  4. Clear the reCAPTCHA. Sephora notes on the page that it “uses Google ReCaptcha and users are subject to Google's privacy policy & terms”, so expect a challenge if you are on a VPN or a shared connection.
  5. Select Check Balance. The figure is returned on the page — no account and no sign-in required.

If you are already signed in, there is a second online route that keeps the card on file: Account Information → Payments & Credits, where Sephora has you enter the card number and PIN and select check. Same answer, inside your account.

4

Add the card to Apple Wallet or Google Pay

This is the most useful feature Sephora buries, and it only appears after a successful balance check — which is why almost nobody finds it. It is also mobile-only:

  1. On a phone, open the same check-your-balance panel. On a desktop browser the wallet button never appears.
  2. Enter the card number and PIN and select Check Balance.
  3. An Add to Wallet button appears underneath. Select it and follow the prompts into Apple Wallet on iOS or Google Pay on Android.

Sephora is explicit that this is a copy, not a transfer: “please note your balance will still be available on your physical or eGift card.” The plastic keeps working. What you gain is a card you cannot leave at home, and a balance you can re-read without re-typing sixteen digits.

Store merchandise credits cannot be added to a wallet either — no PIN, no balance check, no wallet pass.

All four official routes, compared

Sephora documents exactly four ways to read a gift card or eGift card balance. Here they are with what each one actually requires, and what it does for a merchandise credit:

RouteWhereNeedsWorks for a merchandise credit?
Public web formThe Check Balance & Add to Wallet panel on sephora.com/giftcards, or the Sephora app16-digit number, 8-digit PIN, reCAPTCHA. No sign-inNo
Inside your accountsephora.com or sephora.ca → Account Information → Payments & CreditsSign-in, then the number and PINNo
Phone (automated)1-888-860-7897The number and PIN, by keypadNo
In storeAny US or Canada Sephora store — a Beauty Advisor scans itThe physical card, a printout, or the eGift card on your phoneYes — and only this

Two things are missing from that list that you might expect to be on it. Neither company documents a balance lookup at a Sephora at Kohl's register, and there is no third-party checker — a point Sephora makes in unusually blunt language, covered in the scams section.

Sephora's gift card URLs are inconsistent enough that guessing fails. Each of these was loaded and recorded in October 2026:

What you typeWhat happensUse it for
sephora.com/giftcardsRedirects to sephora.com/beauty/giftcardsThe one to remember. Buying, the balance form, the wallet button
sephora.com/beauty/giftcards#checkyourbalanceLoads and jumps straight to the formBookmarking the balance check itself. #balancecheck is a second live anchor on the same panel
sephora.com/gift-cards404. Lands on sephora.com/error/404Nothing — the hyphen is the trap
sephora.com/beauty/faqs-gift-cardsLoads the full gift card FAQ and the US termsThe card types, the four balance routes, the Kohl's rules
sephora.com/beauty/happy-cards-faqLoads the Happy Card pageMulti-brand Happy prepaid cards
sephora.caThe Canadian store, carrying the same checkerCanadian cards — a different legal issuer, see below

The practical lesson: there is no /balance, no /check-balance and no /gift-card-balance path on sephora.com. If a search result sends you to one of those, you are not on Sephora's site.

Four phone numbers, four different jobs

Sephora publishes four numbers across its gift card pages, and they are not interchangeable. One reason so much published advice gets this wrong is that Sephora itself is inconsistent: its consumer gift card FAQ and the gift card page both print 1-888-860-7897, while its corporate gift card FAQ prints the balance number as 1-800-860-7897.

NumberWhat it is forWhere Sephora publishes it
1-888-860-7897Gift card balances and gift card questions — the one you wantOn the gift card page (“To hear your balance, call…”) and at the top of the gift card FAQ
1-877-SEPHORA (1-877-737-4672)General customer service, and buying a physical gift card by phoneThe gift card FAQ and the site footer
1-844-828-5335Gift card orders over $2,000, alongside the corporate ordering platformThe gift card FAQ, buying section
855-606-3494Happy Card balances and expired-card replacements — not a Sephora line at allThe Happy Cards FAQ

If you reach the general line by mistake, you have not wasted the call — Sephora's FAQ says the 888 line handles “any gift card related questions/concerns”, so ask to be moved there rather than reading your PIN to whoever answers first.

The Sephora card with no online balance check

A store merchandise credit is what Sephora issues when it accepts a return but does not refund the original payment method. According to the US terms, these are “typically distributed at Sephora stores for approved merchandise returns made within 31–60 days” — so if you returned something in the second month after buying it, this is probably the card you are holding.

It looks like a gift card. It behaves like a different product:

CapabilityGift card / eGift cardStore merchandise credit
Balance online, in the app or by phoneYesNo — in store only
Spend on sephora.com or in the Sephora appYesNo — Sephora stores only
Spend at Sephora at Kohl'sYesNo

Top up with more valueIn store only, and only if the card was bought from SephoraNo

When your “Sephora card” is not a Sephora card

Sephora is one of the retailers featured on Happy Teen, Happy Lady and Happy Her prepaid cards — the multi-brand cards sold on supermarket racks. Sephora's own Happy Cards FAQ sets out rules that are the opposite of its gift card rules in almost every respect:

  • Balance: call 855-606-3494 or use happycards.com. Nothing on sephora.com can read it.
  • At checkout, select CREDIT. Sephora's instruction is to enter the 16-digit number “in the credit card field” and, in plain terms, “do not enter the 16-digit Card number into the gift card field”. If prompted for a billing address, use your shipping address.
  • Split payments work, but in that order. If the order is larger than the Happy Card balance, the remainder goes on a Sephora gift card in the gift card section while the Happy Card sits in the credit card section.
  • Only the logos on the front count. The card is redeemable only at those merchants.
  • Funds do not expire, but the plastic carries a “valid thru” date — once it passes, calling 855-606-3494 gets a replacement card mailed at no cost. The funds were never gone.
  • No reloads, no ATM withdrawals, no replacement if lost. Treat it as cash.

This matters for a balance check because a Happy Card typed into Sephora's gift card form produces the same dead end as a merchandise credit — and the same temptation to try a third-party site.

eGift cards: the email, the lost link and the odd bank statement

Sephora eGift cards bought on sephora.com or sephora.ca are distributed by CashStar, Inc., part of Blackhawk Network. That one outsourcing fact explains three things people search for separately.

The email that never arrived. Same-day eGift cards are usually sent within an hour of the purchase; future-dated ones go out on the morning of the chosen delivery date. If an eGift card goes un-viewed for 15 days, CashStar emails the sender with options for resolving it, and support can confirm from the order number whether the recipient has opened it. Check the spam folder first, then contact support through the Sephora gift card self-service site.

The card you lost before spending it. This is the one genuine advantage a digital card has over plastic: if an eGift card is lost and has not been redeemed, or still has value on it, CashStar states it “can cancel the original and issue you a new eGift Card for that value”. A lost physical card gets you nothing — Sephora will not replace it.

The charge you do not recognise. An eGift card purchase appears on a card statement as CASHSTAR SEPHORA EGIFT, not as Sephora. If you are reconciling a statement and wondering what that line is, it is a Sephora eGift card bought by you or someone on your account.

Where the balance actually spends — including the Kohl's trap

A balance is only worth what you can spend it on, and Sephora's partnership with Kohl's is where most of the confusion lives. Sephora's Sephora at Kohl's FAQ publishes a payment matrix; the card rows are the ones to memorise:

CardWorks atDoes not work at
Sephora gift card / eGift cardSephora stores, sephora.com, the Sephora app, and Sephora at Kohl's shops inside Kohl's storeskohls.com — even for Sephora products
Kohl's gift cardSephora at Kohl's shops and kohls.comSephora stores and sephora.com
Sephora store merchandise creditSephora stores onlysephora.com, the app, Sephora at Kohl's, kohls.com
Kohl's CashKohl's stores and kohls.com generallyCannot be earned or redeemed at Sephora at Kohl's, or on Sephora purchases on kohls.com
Beauty Insider CashAll Kohl's and Sephora stores, kohls.com and sephora.comKohl's own merchandise — Sephora items only at Kohl's

Two more boundaries worth knowing. US and Canadian cards work in each other's country at the daily exchange rate, but cards bought in the US or Canada cannot be used in other international locations or on international websites — a Sephora card from a US rack is dead at sephora.fr. And a Sephora promotional credit, the kind handed out in campaigns, is narrower still: US stores, sephora.com in the US and the US app only, with no Kohl's and no Canada.

The two-card limit and the $500 online ceiling

If you are checking several balances because you intend to combine them, read this first. Sephora caps how many cards one online order can absorb: “up to two gift cards and/or eGift Cards can be used per online order. To redeem more than two Sephora Gift Cards, please visit a Sephora store.”

Pair that with the purchase limits and you get a ceiling worth planning around. The maximum denomination for a single gift card is $250, and only one card can be bought per online order. So two cards is $500 of gift card value per online order at the very most — above that, the choices are a store visit or splitting the purchase across orders. Anything over $2,000 is pushed to Sephora's corporate ordering platform or the 1-844-828-5335 line.

Also useful if a card is nearly spent: a gift card balance can be topped up, but only at a Sephora store, and only if the card was bought at a Sephora store, on sephora.com or in the app. Value cannot be added to an eGift card, to a card bought from an authorised retailer, or to a merchandise credit.

Expiry, fees, refunds and who actually owes you the money

The good news is unambiguous and comes straight from Sephora's terms, last updated 20 February 2026: “Sephora Gift Cards and store credits do not expire. No fees for inactivity or service fees apply.” There is nothing to check urgently and no balance quietly draining away — a position that goes beyond the federal floor, where 12 CFR §1005.20 requires only five years from the date funds were last loaded.

The rest of the terms are stricter than most people assume:

  • No refunds and no cash out, except where law requires it, and a card cannot be used to buy another card.
  • Lost, stolen, altered or destroyed cards are not replaced — the exception being an unredeemed eGift card, which CashStar can cancel and reissue.
  • Resale is prohibited. A card obtained from an unauthorised seller or reseller, “including through any internet auction site”, will not be honoured and Sephora accepts no liability for its value. That is the single best argument against buying a discounted Sephora card from a marketplace.
  • Your counterparty is not the shop. US cards are issued by LGCS Inc., which the terms name as “the sole legal obligor to the cardholder”; Canadian cards are issued by Sephora Beauty Canada, Inc. The agreement is governed by the laws of Connecticut and contains class-action and jury-trial waivers.

Why Sephora tells you not to use third-party balance checkers

Search for this topic and the first page is dominated by sites that are not Sephora: lookalike balance-check pages, documents hosted on note-taking apps, hijacked university subdomains. Sephora addresses them directly in its own FAQ, and the wording is far stronger than retailers normally use:

“Do not attempt to check your balance through any third-party sites. Such third-party sites are likely to be scams, and use of them may result in the theft of your gift card, eGift Card, store merchandise credit, and/or potentially other personal information.”

The mechanics are simple: a 16-digit number plus an 8-digit PIN is the whole of the money. Hand both to anyone and the balance can be drained in a minute, and because Sephora does not replace a card “used without authorization”, there is no recovery. The rule that follows is short — only ever type those digits on sephora.com, sephora.ca or the Sephora app, and read the address bar before the keypad. Our guide to checking a Visa gift card balance documents the same pattern across prepaid card issuers, and the Walmart balance guide runs into the same wall of imitation sites.

Sephora also runs a gift card scam awareness page describing the two phone scams it sees most: the IRS scam, where a caller impersonating a government agency demands payment in gift cards, and the Granny scam, where the caller claims a relative is in trouble. Its advice is worth repeating in substance: no government agency or legitimate business accepts gift cards for bills, bail or debts; caller ID can be faked; if someone claims a loved one is in trouble, hang up and call that person directly. Report incidents to local authorities and to the US Federal Trade Commission.

Giving Sephora gift cards to a team

Sephora cards are a staple of appreciation gifts, and the rules above change shape when you are buying dozens rather than one.

Retail ordering does not scale. One gift card per online order, a $250 ceiling per card and a $2,000 cap before you are routed to the corporate platform means a 50-person gesture cannot be done through the normal checkout. Sephora's corporate programme, run on the same CashStar platform, sets a minimum of 10 cards and offers denominations from $10 to $250, with no personalisation or print-on-demand branding; physical orders take one to two business days to process before shipping, and rush handling is charged per box.

The balance questions land on you. Every recipient who scratches too hard, loses an email or holds a merchandise credit by mistake becomes an internal support ticket — which is the real argument for digital delivery with a reissue path rather than a box of plastic.

Single-brand cards narrow the audience. A beauty card is an excellent gift for the people who want it and dead weight for everyone else, and it only spends in the US and Canada. Redemption data consistently favours choice over a single brand — see the 2026 gift card statistics and our bulk gift cards for employees guide.

Tax is not optional. In the US a gift card given to an employee is a cash equivalent and therefore taxable wages whatever the amount; the de minimis fringe exclusion does not cover it. Our guide to the IRS rules on gift cards for employees works through the gross-up, and the treatment differs sharply elsewhere — compare the UK trivial benefits exemption.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my Sephora gift card balance?

Open sephora.com/giftcards, scroll to the Check Balance & Add to Wallet panel, enter the 16-digit card number and the 8-digit PIN and clear the reCAPTCHA. No account is needed. The same check is available by calling 1-888-860-7897, inside your account under Payments & Credits, or in any US or Canada Sephora store.

Can I check a Sephora gift card balance without the PIN?

Not online and not by phone — both require the 8-digit PIN. If the PIN is damaged, a Beauty Advisor can scan the card in store. If the card never had a PIN, it is a store merchandise credit, and an in-store check is the only option Sephora provides for it.

Why does Sephora say my gift card number is invalid?

In order of likelihood: a mistyped digit, a store merchandise credit or Happy Card entered in the gift card form, a PIN that tore with the foil, or a card bought from an unauthorised reseller — which Sephora does not honour. Call 1-888-860-7897 with the receipt to establish which.

Do Sephora gift cards expire or lose value?

No. Sephora's terms state that gift cards and store credits do not expire and that no inactivity or service fees apply. A Happy Card's funds do not expire either, although its printed “valid thru” date means you may need a free replacement card to spend them.

Can I use a Sephora gift card at Kohl's?

Inside a Sephora at Kohl's shop, yes. On kohls.com, no — not even for Sephora products. And note the return rule: merchandise bought with a Sephora gift card at Sephora at Kohl's is refunded as a Kohl's merchandise credit, while the same return at a freestanding Sephora within 30 days comes back as a new Sephora gift card.

Can I use a Sephora store credit online?

No. Sephora states that store merchandise credits cannot be used online or in the app and are accepted only in Sephora stores for merchandise. They are also not accepted at Sephora at Kohl's.

How many Sephora gift cards can I use on one order?

Two per online order. To spend more than two cards, Sephora directs you to a store, where there is no documented cap. The maximum denomination on a single card is $250.

Can I add my Sephora gift card to Apple Wallet or Google Pay?

Yes, and it is the overlooked feature. From a mobile browser or the app, check the balance first; an Add to Wallet button then appears. Sephora confirms the balance stays available on the physical or eGift card as well.

My Sephora eGift card email never arrived. What now?

Check spam first. Same-day cards usually send within an hour of purchase and future-dated ones on the morning of the delivery date. The sender is notified if a card stays un-viewed for 15 days, and CashStar support can confirm from the order number whether it has been opened — and can cancel and reissue a card that is lost but unredeemed.

What is the CASHSTAR SEPHORA EGIFT charge on my statement?

A Sephora eGift card purchase. Sephora eGift cards bought on sephora.com or sephora.ca are distributed by CashStar, Inc., part of Blackhawk Network, and the charge carries the processor's name rather than Sephora's.

Can I reload or top up a Sephora gift card?

Only at a Sephora store, and only if the card was bought at a Sephora store, on sephora.com or in the app. Value cannot be added to an eGift card, to a card bought from an authorised retailer, or to a store merchandise credit.

Is there a Sephora gift card balance checker other than Sephora's own?

No legitimate one. Sephora's own FAQ warns that third-party balance-check sites “are likely to be scams” and may result in theft of the card and other personal information. Only enter the number and PIN on sephora.com, sephora.ca or the Sephora app.
